Research Leaders Program seeks applicants, nominations

The Office of Research and Economic Development is now taking nominations and applications for the Research Leaders Program. Launched in 2020, the initiative seeks to identify and develop Nebraska’s next generation of research leaders.

In partnership with the Center for Professional and Executive Development in the College of Business, the program will provide up to 15 selected faculty with the information, skills and connections they need to assemble and lead large collaborative teams and pursue major extramural funding. Applicants must be either tenure-track or research associate professors, or tenure-track or research full professors.

Yufeng Ge, associate professor of biological systems engineering and a participant in the first cohort of the Research Leaders Program, identified his research vision in his final presentation: a UNL center that leads the world in space agricultural research, education and outreach. He said the program provided practical tools to assess and better understand one’s own strengths in personality, leadership and management.

“RLP put me in the same room with a group of prominent researchers from other disciplines,” Ge said. “It was eye-opening to listen to the stories about their research programs, their successes and the challenges they have faced.”

University administrators and faculty are urged to nominate colleagues for the 2021-2022 program by 5 p.m. June 15. Eligible faculty also may apply directly; nomination is not a prerequisite for submitting an application. Applications are due by 5 p.m. June 30, and selections will be announced mid-July.
