NU 2 NIH is an initiative to help University of Nebraska-Lincoln faculty develop competitive proposals for submission to the National Institutes of Health. The Office of Research and Economic Development will select up to 12 faculty to participate in the program annually through a university-wide application process. During 2022-2023, NU 2 NIH will focus on the Research Project Grant (R01) mechanism.
Content
The 2022-2023 offering of NU 2 NIH will focus on strategic development of all NIH R01 application components, including specific aims, research strategy, budget and ancillary documents. Through experiential learning, mock review panels and expert consultation, NU 2 NIH will guide participants as they prepare a complete R01 application for submission in October 2023. In addition, and with guidance from ORED, participants will identify an investigator from outside the University of Nebraska with a track record of NIH support to serve as a program mentor.
Schedule
During the 2022-2023 academic year, NU 2 NIH programming will run from September to April. This will be followed by two rounds of proposal review during the summer of 2023 with intended proposal submission in early October 2023. Faculty participants also are expected to meet regularly with their mentors throughout the program.

Eligibility
Faculty conducting research in areas fundable by NIH who have not yet received R01 support as principal investigator and have completed Part 1 of the NIH R01 Development Workshop are eligible to apply for the 2022-2023 program.
Applications
All eligible faculty are invited to apply for NU 2 NIH. Those faculty who are interested must attend the two-day NIH R01 Development Workshop, Part 1 hosted by ORED. NU 2 NIH applications for the 2022-2023 program will open at the conclusion of the workshop and are due by 5 p.m. Friday, October 7, 2022.
To apply, applicants must submit the following as a single PDF file:
- a Specific Aims page (1 page maximum)
- one paragraph describing their project’s significance and one paragraph describing their project’s innovation (1 page maximum)
- a short statement describing their interest in and readiness for NU 2 NIH, including details about relevant publications and availability of preliminary/feasibility data (1 page maximum)
- names of up to three potential external mentors with brief (1-2 sentences) rationale for each
Applications will open at the conclusion of the NIH R01 Development Workshop, Part 1.
Review and Selection Process
Applications will be reviewed internally by senior administrators in the Office of Research and Economic Development and externally by NIH research development consultants. Application review criteria include:
- Clear connection between the applicant’s project aims and level of readiness for program participation (e.g., relevant publications and preliminary/feasibility data).
- Alignment between the applicant’s project aims and opportunities for NIH R01 support.
In consultation with leaders in the applicants’ colleges/division, the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development will make participant selection decisions by late October.
