New rules from the Environmental Protection Agency restrict use of methylene chloride, also known as dichloromethane. This rule potentially impacts UNL employees who use the substance as a laboratory solvent/reagent or use products containing methylene chloride such as paint strippers, adhesives, sealants and degreasers/cleaners.

Researchers and others who use these products should complete an information form as soon as possible.

The rule, issued May 8, is under authority of the federal Toxic Substance Control Act. It mandates varying dates of compliance, with regulated entities required to conduct exposure assessments in certain circumstances by May 2025. UNL Environmental Health and Safety will follow up on form submissions to assess each use individually and collaborate with the campus community to develop compliance plans.
