Research Roadmap to provide ‘a foundation for success’ in fulfilling N2025 goals

The Office of Research and Economic Development recently unveiled the Research Roadmap, a framework for achieving the growth goals for research and creative activity outlined in the university’s N2025 strategic plan.

Nebraska’s research activity has experienced impressive growth over the past decade. In fiscal year 2019, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln achieved a record $317 million in research expenditures, a new record. Chancellor Ronnie Green has outlined a vision for a research and creative activity enterprise approaching $450 million by 2025. To accomplish its goals, Nebraska seeks to publish in top journals; earn nationally relevant awards and recognitions; pursue large interdisciplinary projects; make discoveries that elevate Nebraska’s reputation; and enhance the quality of the student experience through opportunities in research and creative activity.

Bob Wilhelm, vice chancellor for research and economic development, announced the core principles of the Research Roadmap during the 2020 Faculty Recognition Event, part of Nebraska Research Days. A full version of the plan is available online.

“We must take a highly targeted approach to achieving our goals,” Wilhelm said. “The Research Roadmap provides a foundation for our success. ORED is committed to partnering with administrators, colleges, schools, departments, centers and faculty members to realize this vision and continue evolving as a university.”

The Research Roadmap contains four core aspirations, with additional strategies and tactics for achieving success in each area.

  • Enhance the quality and stature of research, scholarship and creative activity.
  • Cultivate and steward the external partnerships necessary to advance the relevance, impact, competitiveness and utilization of research at Nebraska.
  • Enable and incentivize interdisciplinary teams to harness the intellectual capital necessary to advance fundamental knowledge and access the resources required to address society’s grand challenges.
  • Provide opportunities for all faculty to communicate the broader impact of their work, increase their scholarly prominence and earn external recognition for excellence in research, scholarship or creative activity.
