The new Book Fellowship and Manuscript Workshop Program offered by the Office of Research and Innovation will provide faculty a block of time to write a new book and/or funding to publish a new book.
The program aligns with university goals to promote excellence and achievement in research and creative activity through book publishing and increase the number of books published by Nebraska faculty.
Proposals for the 2024-25 academic year must be submitted in NuRamp by 5 p.m. Jan. 15, 2025. The deadline for 2025-26 is expected to be the second Friday in October.

Faculty may request funding for a course buyout for one semester and/or one month of summer salary support to provide them with a block of time to write a new book. This program also will provide support for manuscript workshops to provide input on book manuscripts before submission for publication.
The program is using the Association of American Universities definition of books, which is: books, case books, edited volumes, encyclopedias and textbooks. Proceedings, chapters and study guides are not included in the AAU definition of books. Updates to current editions will not be supported by this program.
About $150,000 is available for the program in 2024-25. Matching funds from the applicants’ department, college and/or center are encouraged but not required.
Funding from this program is intended to complement internal funding for research that may generate content for a book.
R&I staff will be available to answer questions about the new program on Nov. 12 as part of Nebraska Research Days. Register for the 10 a.m.-noon session, “How to Select a Publisher and Negotiate a Contract.” Also available that day, noon-2 p.m., is a session during which UNL authors will read passages from their books. Register here.
Lunch will be available as a registration option between sessions.
