This fall, Research Compliance, Integrity and Security is offering educational opportunities designed to support researchers, study teams, administrators and campus partners in navigating compliance, research integrity and research security requirements. Topics will include human subjects research, post-approval IRB responsibilities, collaborative research oversight, and international travel and research security considerations.
September’s training will be held via Zoom, 10 a.m. Sept. 24, with the topic “Does It Need IRB Review? Understanding Human Subjects Research and IRB Approval Criteria.” Registration is required to receive the Zoom link.
Determining whether an activity requires IRB review can be challenging, especially when projects involve program evaluation, quality improvement, assessment activities or other forms of data collection. This interactive session will guide participants through University of Nebraska-Lincoln policies governing human subjects research and IRB review requirements. It will also help researchers distinguish activities that require IRB approval from those that do not. Real-world examples and case studies will provide practical guidance for applying regulatory and ethical standards in research planning.
The session is aimed toward faculty, staff, students, research coordinators and others involved in designing, conducting, supporting or overseeing human subjects research at UNL.

October: “Understanding Ongoing Reporting Responsibilities.” This session aims to help attendees learn about investigators’ responsibilities after IRB approval, including reportable events, protocol changes, noncompliance reporting and other post-approval requirements. Hybrid attendance options will be available.
October-November: “International Travel, Research Security and Foreign Influence Training.” Hosted by Export Control and Global Affairs, this training focuses on international travel compliance, export controls, research security, foreign influence considerations, and best practices for safeguarding university data, devices and research activities while abroad. Multiple session options will be offered.
November: “Working with External Research Partners: Understanding Single IRB Reliance and Individual Investigator Agreements.” This session will help investigators and research teams understand when single IRB (sIRB) reliance arrangements and Individual Investigator Agreements may be required and how to effectively manage collaborative human subjects research projects.
