The Office of Research Compliance, Integrity and Security will host a one-hour Institutional Review Board training, “After IRB Approval: Understanding Ongoing Reporting Responsibilities,” on Oct. 27.
The session is 3-4:30 p.m. at the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center, Ubuntu Room. A virtual option is also available. Registration is required for both options.
Obtaining IRB approval is only the beginning of a research project’s compliance responsibilities. This training is meant to provide an overview of investigators’ and study teams’ reporting obligations after a project has been approved, with a focus on Human Research Protection Program Policies 11.002, 13.001, 13.002 and 14.001.
Participants will learn when changes to approved research require IRB review, what events and findings must be reported to the IRB, and how continuing oversight protects research participants and maintains regulatory compliance. The session will include practical examples and common reporting scenarios encountered throughout the lifecycle of a research study.
The training is open to faculty, staff, students, research coordinators and others responsible for conducting, overseeing or supporting human subjects at UNL.
By the end of this training, participants should be able to:
- Identify changes to approved research that require IRB review and approval and distinguish them from changes that may be implemented without prior IRB approval under limited circumstances.
- Recognize reportable events and information, including unanticipated problems, protocol deviations, noncompliance, and other study-related occurrences that must be communicated to the IRB.
- Apply UNL IRB post-approval reporting requirements to ensure ongoing compliance, support participant protections, and maintain the integrity of approved research activities.
