Twelve University of Nebraska-Lincoln faculty members have been selected to participate in the 2024-2025 cohort of the Office of Research and Innovation’s Research Leaders Program. This initiative to identify and develop Nebraska’s next generation of research leaders is delivered in partnership with the Center for Executive and Professional Development in the College of Business.
Participants were selected through a competitive application process. The faculty members selected to participate in the fifth cohort of the Research Leaders Program are:
- Nirupam Aich, civil and environmental engineering
- Vitaly Alexandrov, chemical and biomolecular engineering
- Byron Chaves, food science and technology
- Christopher Gustafson, agricultural economics
- Susan Loveall, special education and communication disorders
- Taro Mieno, agricultural economics
- Toshihiro Obata, biochemistry
- Massimiliano Pierobon, School of Computing
- Sabrina Russo, School of Biological Sciences
- Ana Maria Vélez, entomology
- Mark Wilson, biochemistry
- Lisong Xu, School of Computing
These research-active faculty will gain the information, skills and connections needed to assemble and lead teams in the pursuit of major extramural funding. The program begins in August and will conclude next April, when participants will present their plans for elevating their research, scholarship or creative endeavors to their colleagues and university leaders.
The Research Leaders Program elevates the capacity and competitiveness of mid-level to senior faculty to develop and implement their visions for impactful research, said Sherri Jones, interim vice chancellor for research and economic development.
“I’m proud of the program. The visions shared by the newest faculty cohort are inspiring, forward-looking, interdisciplinary and engaged across Nebraska and beyond. We’re eager to see their progress and impact, and how each leader promotes a culture and environment for success at UNL.”
Applications for the next cohort will be solicited in spring 2025. Visit the Research Leaders Program website for more details or contact Nathan Meier, assistant vice chancellor for research development.
