Awards, Honors and Recognitions
Martin Centurion, physics and astronomy, was named a fellow of the American Physical Society. Fellowships honor members who have made advances in physics through original research and publication; significant, innovative contributions in the application of physics to science and technology; significant contributions to teaching physics; or have participated in the society’s activities.
Helen Fagan, agricultural leadership, education and communication, was one of the top five finalists for the 2020 Woman of the Year award. The Inspire Awards, sponsored by the Lincoln Journal Star, recognize women in the Lincoln community who have excelled, not only in their professional lives, but as leaders and role models.
David Hage, chemistry, has earned the 2021 ACS Award in Chromatography from the American Chemical Society. Recipients are recognized for outstanding contributions to the field of chromatography, with particular consideration given to developments of new methods. He will be honored at the ACS 2021 Spring National Meeting in San Antonio. Hage, whose research in affinity chromatography involves rapidly separating compounds from complex samples, recently joined a national team that is repurposing patented technologies to develop and manufacture a fast-acting COVID-19 antibody test.
Clyde Ogg, extension educator in agronomy and horticulture, was recognized as a Life Member of the American Association of Pesticide Safety Educators. He was honored for dedicating his professional career to pesticide safety education. Ogg currently leads a six-member team that produces educational materials that enable almost 20,500 pesticide applicators and farmers and 11,000 commercial and noncommercial applicators to purchase and use restricted use pesticides.
Philip Schwadel, sociology, received the 2020 Distinguished Sociology of Religion Journal Article Award from the Association for the Sociology of Religion. The award recognizes the most outstanding journal article published in any issue of volume 80 of Sociology of Religion that make an exceptional contribution to the sociological study of religion. Schwadel was honored for “Sectarian Religion and Political Tolerance in the United States.”
Ash E. Smith, emerging media arts, is part of the Exhibit Columbus Symposium New Middles, which kicked off Sept. 15 and runs through Oct. 27. The symposium gathers national and international thought leaders in architecture, art, design and landscape architecture, together with Columbus, Indiana, stakeholders to explore the question: What is the future of the middle city?
Christopher Tuan, civil engineering, received the 2019 Concrete Award for New Technology from the Concrete Promotional Group of Kansas City for implementing conductive concrete in boarding platforms along Kansas City bus routes, keeping those platforms free from ice and snow.
Professional Involvement
Kwame Dawes, English, is the new editor of the national “American Life in Poetry” column. Dawes takes over for Ted Kooser, who founded the column more than 15 years ago. Dawes will begin the role in January 2021.

Lily Wang, architectural engineering, and Z. Ellen Peng, who received a Ph.D. in architectural engineering from Nebraska in 2015, co-authored an article that has been chosen to receive the 2020 ASHA Editor’s Award for the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research – Hearing Section.

Oleh Khalimonchuk, biochemistry, has been named interim director of the university’s Nebraska Redox Biology Center. He joined the Department of Biochemistry as an assistant professor in 2011 and is also a member of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and an affiliate member of the Center for Iron and Heme Disorders at the University of Utah School of Medicine.
