Zavala named assistant vice chancellor for research

Becky Zavala joined the Office of Research and Economic Development’s senior leadership team Jan. 5.

As assistant vice chancellor for research, Zavala is developing and implementing strategies to increase the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s research stature and achieve its growth goals. She also serves as ORED’s chief of staff and oversees business and operations, including sponsored programs, research finance and information systems, events and outreach, and learning and development.

Zavala joined ORED in 2005, most recently serving as director of research finance and information systems for six years. She brings expertise in financial oversight, business support, and data analysis and reporting. With her leadership, ORED has streamlined financial operations, improved transparency in reporting and developed tools to track sponsored funding data more efficiently and effectively.

She earned a master’s degree in business administration from Nebraska in 2009 and a bachelor’s degree in business administration and management from Doane University in 2005.

Zavala is assuming the role previously held by Mike Zeleny, who became chief of staff and associate to Chancellor Ronnie Green Jan 5.
