The Office of Research and Economic Development is seeking presenters for the third annual Student Research Days Slam on March 28. Faculty are urged to encourage their students to participate in this opportunity to share their work with a campuswide audience.
The contest is open to undergraduates, graduate students and postdocs in any discipline. Applications will be in the form of a 90-second video “trailer,” submitted via Flip, previewing the applicant’s potential Slam presentation. Selected finalists will share their work in five-minute, engaging presentations at the Slam. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. at the Wick Alumni Center, with the Slam competition to follow from noon-1 p.m.
Jocelyn Bosley, research impact coordinator for the Office of Research and Economic Development, said applicants’ video submissions should reflect on the prompt: “Imagine your 11-year-old self is shadowing you during your research or creative activity. What would 11-year-old you think is the coolest or most surprising part of the work you do today?”
The selection committee is interested both in the content of submissions and in applicants’ ability to engage the viewer with creativity and narrative skills.
Application videos must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. March 6. Five finalists will be selected by March 8 to present at the Slam. A winner, to be decided by the audience, will receive a $500 prize, and the other finalists will each receive $100. Attendees must register to attend the event. Faculty and staff are encouraged to attend to support these scholars.
