Bits of electric polarization as viewed though an atomic force microscope display on the computer screen. Each bit–the white blotches–are 1/1000 the thinness of a human hair. Alexei Gruverman, Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy, is working on methods of computer storage and data storage using bits of electric polarization written by a voltage-free method using only mechanical pressure.
