Welcomes and Farewells

Jeff Wilkerson joined ORED as research communications and content manager. Previously, he was host of the Market Journal Television program produced by the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Jeff is a 2008 UNL graduate and a native of Coleridge, Nebraska.

Kathy Partlow is ORED’s new senior proposal development coordinator. Before coming to Nebraska, she worked in a similar role in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Kathy has a bachelor’s degree in bioengineering from UIUC and a doctorate in molecular cell biology from Washington University in St. Louis. She grew up in Casey, Illinois, a small agricultural community where you can find eight of the Guinness World Records’ largest items.

Nancy Pettito, operations manager for NUtech Ventures, will depart ORED in April after nine years with the university. She is taking on the role of Collective Impact Lincoln program manager at Civic Nebraska.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: ANDREA SCHREIBER

This month we’re spotlighting Andrea Schreiber, a member of the pre-award team in Sponsored Programs. Have a colleague you’d like to see featured? Submit a nomination here.

What is your title in ORED, and how long have you been part of the team?

Andrea: I am a grants coordinator III, and I’ve been in ORED for 3.5 years.

Explain how your team fits into ORED’s overall mission.

Our team provides our faculty with pre-award services, such as proposal compliance review, proposal submission, just-in-time materials submission and assistance with the many other matters that come up before (and at) the time of award.

What has been your proudest moment working in ORED?

One of my newer faculty members had what I believe was his first-ever National Institutes of Health proposal funded, and he was so excited and appreciative. The department liaison said he had tears in his eyes when he told her about it. Any time one of our faculty gets funded it’s a great feeling, but I’ll definitely always remember that one.

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise your colleagues.

My intended career path was to be a professor of political science, with a focus on American politics/elections and voting behavior. After I earned my master’s degree, I decided against it, switched gears, and went back to school for an MBA. If I could go back in time, I’d go for the Ph.D.

What is your favorite quote/saying?

“Wake up and be awesome.” It’s been my morning alarm on my phone forever and is my goal every single day.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

Cooking, sometimes baking, hanging out with friends, watching too much TV, reading, and social media (yeah, that’s a hobby…).

What has been the most important innovation you have witnessed in your lifetime?

The rise and influence of the internet and technology. It’s astonishing to think of the things, good and bad, that are possible now that we never would have dreamed of even 10 years ago. I love ordering my coffee from a phone app without having to interact with another human being before drinking said coffee, for instance!

WATER COOLER CHAT

If you’ve been wondering what your colleagues do to celebrate March Madness, here’s some insight:

Suzan Lund, Sponsored Programs, checks scores to see how well her bracket is doing, if she filled one out. If not, she enjoys Netflix and any snacks that others provide!

Kathy Partlow, Proposal Development, roots for the underdog — except when a Big Ten team is the favorite, of course.

Jeff Wilkerson, Research Communications, has established a new March Madness tradition of attending potato potlucks with coworkers.

Kathy, our new colleague from Urbana-Champaign, suggested the next question: What is your favorite restaurant in Lincoln? Let us know your favorite so she can try them all!

THE MONTH IN PICTURES

Suzan Lund, director of Sponsored Programs, recently returned from a week in the Colorado mountains, near Salida, over the Lincoln Public Schools spring break. She spent time with her daughter, Zoey, and many friends. She said they enjoyed beautiful weather and incredible sunrises, and they’re looking forward to returning next year!

Craig Kreikemeier-Bower, clinical veterinarian with the Institutional Animal Care Program, and his family welcomed Aaron Taylor Bower, born on January 25. He weighed 8 pounds 4 ounces and was 21 inches long.

Thanks to Megan McMasters, events and outreach manager, and the Research Communications team for helping with the March 26 Nebraska Lecture, which was attended by approximately 100 people. Andy Jewell (pictured above) delivered “Our Cather Heritage,” which focused on five enduring lessons from Willa Cather’s work.

About 130 people from 30 organizations across the nation attended SciComm 2018, held March 23-25 on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus. Kudos to Megan McMasters, events and outreach manager, and Nathan Meier, assistant vice chancellor for research, for representing ORED on the SciComm committee and helping the event run smoothly.

Thanks to all who contributed to this month’s OPEN Book. If you have news you’d like to share in the newsletter, submit it here or send it to Tiffany Lee at tlee9@unl.edu.
