R&I Traditions

Staff and Family Picnic – In the summer, R&I colleagues and their families are invited to gather to enjoy a picnic and games. We have held this event at the Auld Pavillion at Antelope Park, Lincoln Saltdogs Baseball game and mini-golfing adventure course.

Potluck – Warm up and taste the fairs of some fabulous amateurish chefs amoungst our group at the annual R&I Potluck held in the depths of winter.

Ice Cream Social – Sprinkles, chocolate syrup, Oreo crumbles…these are a few of my favorite things. The Ice Cream Social provides you a cool treat in the heat of the summer (or in a torrential rain storm.)

Pie and Golf – For over 20 years, just before the holiday shutdown, the tradition of gathering for a lunch of pizza, pie, and golf has evolved from the halls of the Alexander Building to the Prem S. Paul Research Center at Whittier School. It’s a time filled with camaraderie, connection, a bit of luck, and plenty of bragging. The ‘ish’ comes from the Covid years, of not being able to meet in person to carry out the tradition.

Staff Recognition Event – We celebrate our team members contributions awarding individual Invaluable Service Awards and the Vice Chancellor’s Cup for Outstanding Customer Service to a team. We bowl, play trivia and we even have a raffle drum drawing for prizes!

Research Pen – The tradition of giving a pen to the research community surrounds being creative, putting pen to paper and taking your curiosity into action of researching/creating something new. A new pen is unveiled at Nebraska Research Days. This collection was a gift to long time employee, Mike Zeleney.

Nebraska Research Days – Nebraska Research Days is the Office of Research and Innovation’s annual weeklong celebration of UNL faculty research, scholarly activity and creative endeavors. Held in November, activities vary but can include faculty recognition, book talks, a research slam and more. Student Research Days, held every spring, celebrates the work of graduate and undergraduate students.
