OPEN Book – April 2023

News and Upcoming Events

NIC Towel Drive
Nebraska Innovation Campus is a proud partner for the annual “Towel Drive” event. Organized by Don’t Panic Labs and People’s City Mission, the event aims to collect towels for people in need. Towels are always in short supply and this two-week donation drive serves a vital need. From May 15-26, NIC Partners and the University community are encouraged to bring towels to The Mill Coffee & Bistro between 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. New or used towels in any condition and of any size will be accepted. The towels will be used at the People’s City Mission shelter in Lincoln.

ORED HR Request Forms
In an effort to better meet the varying and ever-growing HR needs across ORED, the ORED HR Team, and L.D. Miller have been working to create a series of online HR Request Forms that can be utilized to notify the HR team of an action they need to take.

You can find the new ORED HR Request Forms on the OPEN Website under ORED HR Request Forms.

What this Means for You
Instead of emailing your ORED HR person (Ember, Aaron, Jessica), please go to the website above and fill out a request form for the HR action you need.  This will create a ‘request ticket’ for the ORED HR team and will be assigned to the appropriate team member. The ticketing system will allow the team to be aware of the work that needs to be completed, manage workloads and allow multiple team members to access the ticket.

HR Request Forms are located at https://research.unl.edu/open/ored-hr-request-forms/.

3rd Annual All Staff Conference, May 22-23, 2023 – Registration is FULL!
Congratulations to the All Staff Conference Committee for planning a successful conference that ‘sold out’ in less than a week! The event attendance was limited to 300 registrants and will be held in the Nebraska East Union.  If you are interested in volunteering for next year’s steering committee, email staff.conference@unl.edu.

Learning and Development

Props to the Participants in the Racial Equity and Gender Equity Habit-Building Challenges
The challenges took place from January – April 2023, meeting approximately every other week for six weeks.  These challenges were offered as a part of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion #NCLUDE small learning cohorts.  New opportunities will be offered in Summer and Fall.  If you are interested in participating or possibly anchoring a cohort, please contact Becky Carter.

Neil Rutledge, one of the participants said that “Participating in the Racial Equity Habit Building Challenge was a very meaningful experience – an opportunity to get together with colleagues to discuss challenging readings centered on the role of race in society, and the ways in which it impacts our lives and the experiences of those around us. I would highly recommend the Challenge to colleagues.”

The Month in Pictures

Research Compliance Services (RCS) held an appreciation event for its three committees (IRB, CIRC, and SROC) on April 19 at the Lied Commons. The event was coordinated by ORED and RCS to recognize and thank our committee members and staff. Bob Wilhelm and Sara Quinn gave a few remarks, and then they played a short round of Jeopardy. Dan Hoyt was also thanked, given his pending retirement.  Unfortunately, you will need to use your imagination for the pictures of Sara Quinn dressed as Alex Trebek as the quality of the pictures was not proportionate to the performance.

Keri Williams, Project Specialist II, in Sponsored Programs, and her family moved to Hickman from Omaha. They moved to Hickman because it has a great school for their daughter, Kristine, and to be closer to campus. Kristine will start Kindergarten in August at Norris.

Nick Glass, Research Building Systems Lead Technician, has a new puppy, Koda.   Pictured are Koda and Nick’s daughter, Rylee Glass.
