She truly practices active listening on a small and large scale, and she is not afraid to push us to do better, even when it might not be easy. Her positive influence is rippling out to others.
Jen Nelson presented a Vice Chancellor’s Invaluable Service Award to Craig Goodrich. Craig is a Pre-Award Team Lead within Sponsored Programs. Craig is known for his exceptional dedication, leadership, and humanity he brings to the office. For more than ten years, Craig has made a meaningful and lasting impact through his unwavering commitment to service and to the people behind the work. Craig approaches every interaction with empathy, generosity, and an authentic interest in others. Whether supporting faculty and staff through complex challenges or offering quiet encouragement during difficult moments, he consistently leads with care. He is also known for his remarkable ability to manage demanding workloads with clarity and efficiency, quickly identifying priorities and moving work forward without losing sight of people. Craig’s service, character, and impact make him a truly invaluable asset.
Jen Nelson presented a Vice Chancellor’s Invaluable Service Award to Jaclyn Tan. Jaclyn is a Proposal Development Coordinator on Research Development team. When a colleague had to leave unexpectedly early for maternity leave, it was incredible to have Jaclyn as a trusted colleague, whom the team could rely on to assume complex assignments at a moment’s notice with remarkable efficiency and professionalism. This included facilitating red team reviews for two multi-million-dollar proposals ($15M+) in award requests-and supporting a staggering 14 NSF CAREER Club participants, seven of whom submitted proposals. Notably, Jaclyn managed these efforts alongside existing commitments: (1) providing outstanding support for 57 proposals in FY2025, including an NSF EPSCoR Research Fellows proposal led by Dr. Kazuo Yamazaki (awarded, $234,669) and an NIH R01 proposal led by Dr. Yusong Li (awarded, $1,479,178); (2) demonstrating exceptional mentorship as a co-supervisor to two undergraduate apprentices; and (3) developing a TipSheet series to help proposers identify funding, use SciENcv, and prepare for sponsor site visits-all while providing exemplary leadership as Co-Chair of the Staff Senate Elections Committee. These accomplishments exemplify Jaclyn’s commitment to excellence and innovation and demonstrate her willingness to go above and beyond expectations to provide exceptional customer service.
Jen Nelson presented a Vice Chancellor’s Invaluable Service Award to Jessica Jones. Jessica is an Animal Care Program Specialist, in the Animal Care Program. Her attention to detail, problem solving and ability to mark off a to-do list is unmatched. She helps onboarding new faculty and research staff which includes maintaining training records for over 230 individuals just for our service centers alone. This is a crucial part of meeting our federal regulations and maintaining a safe work environment. Her excellent customer service helps all of these individuals (many of whom are new to campus and research) feel welcome and comfortable in their new roles. Jessica also does all of the billing for the service centers. This requires an extremely high level of attention to detail that includes gathering all of the information and formatting it into a completed invoice for our customers. The other main service she provides to our customers is ordering research supplies and animal models. Just in 2025 alone she placed over 625 orders. This includes identifying vendors and placing orders, receiving items and scheduling pickups and filing all of the paperwork appropriately to meet audit standards. Jessica comes to work each day ready to take on the next task, she is our go-to for all things travel, event planning and SUPERB poster design.
Jen Nelson presented a Vice Chancellor’s Invaluable Service Award to Joanne Murray. Joanne is the MRI Technologist in the Center for Brain, Biology and Behavior (CB3). Joanne has served CB3 with exceptional dedication for more than ten years, consistently going above and beyond to support a demanding and complex university research environment. Joanne expertly conducts MRI sessions while coordinating closely with principal investigators to support the specific needs of their individual research programs. She prepares and optimizes MRI sequence protocols, coordinates scheduling, and manages the secure transfer, storage, and backup of imaging data. She also provides comprehensive safety training and screening for researchers, rigorously enforces magnetic field safety, and ensures a positive, comfortable experience for all study participants. Her attention to detail and professionalism are critical to the success of CB3’s research mission. Joanne has also been instrumental in fostering and maintaining a strong relationship with Athletics, supporting MRI scans for student athletes with care and efficiency. Most recently, she played a key role in the successful installation of the Siemens Cima X 3.0 Tesla MRI scanner in summer 2025. Joanne’s expertise, reliability, and unwavering commitment make her truly invaluable to CB3 and the Office of Research and Innovation.
Jen Nelson presented a Vice Chancellor’s Invaluable Service Award to Stephanie Vendetti. Stephanie is the Events Coordinator for R&I. During a period of staffing vacancies at the Nebraska Center for Virology, Stephanie stepped in on short notice to plan and execute the NCV Symposium, delivering one of the strongest events the center has hosted. She again demonstrated initiative and leadership by assuming responsibility for planning the upcoming NCV Spring Retreat, ensuring continuity and high-quality programming during a time of transition. Stephanie’s willingness to go above and beyond, combined with her professionalism, collaboration, and commitment to R&I’s mission, exemplifies the values of leadership, innovation, and initiative. Stephanie’s contributions have been essential to NCV’s success, and she is highly deserving of this recognition.
2025 Team Achievement Award
R&I is giving out a new award this year. The Team Achievement Award went to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) team within Research Compliance, Integrity, and Security. Pictured left to right is: Rachel Wenzl, Jen Nelson and Becky Freeman. Not pictured: Saumi Mathews, Joshua Renner, and Mikaela Myers.
The IRB team is responsible for administration and oversight of all human subjects research at UNL. The quantity and quality of work related to these activities is in and of itself worthy of recognition. However, my nomination is based their extraordinary effort related to continued accreditation with the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs. The year-long process includes (a) compiling and synthesizing information on the structure, processes, and IRB activities over a 5-year period, (b) addressing requested revisions of the report, (c) arranging a site visit with various campus stakeholders on campus (e.g. administrators, researchers), (d) interviewing with AAHRPP site visitor, and (e) responding to areas for any clarity or concern (of which there were none!). The IRB staff must complete all of this without affecting the daily ongoing human subjects oversight responsibilities. AAHRPP accreditation is fundamental for our research activities, reputation, and operation. Yet, the campus community is often unaware of this process.
2025 Invaluable Collaborator Award
Each year we recognize someone outside of our organization who has been an invaluable collaborator to our team. This year, the R&I Invaluable Collaborator Award goes to Laura Gonnerman (General Counsel). Laura Gonnerman, Associate General Counsel is our winner for the Invaluable Collaborator Award in recognition of her exceptional leadership and support during 2025. As federal changes to research funding rules and regulations emerged rapidly and without clear precedent, Laura became an indispensable resource to Sponsored Programs and to the broader University of Nebraska community.
Laura has and continues to meet weekly with Office of Sponsored Programs leaders from all four campuses to interpret evolving requirements and assess institutional risk. During this uncertain period, her ability to translate complex and ambiguous federal guidance into clear, actionable advice allowed our research enterprise to continue moving forward responsibly.
Laura has taken time to advise OSP on scenarios specific to our campus, offering thoughtful, practical counsel tailored to unique needs and challenges. OSP has relied on her judgment repeatedly while navigating difficult decisions with limited precedent and significant potential consequences.
What sets Laura apart is her commitment to partnership and service. Her responsiveness, collaborative approach, and steady presence during the most challenging university research environment, have been invaluable. Her leadership in 2025 set a standard of excellence that directly shaped institutional decision making during a critical period.
2025 Vice Chancellor’s Cup for Outstanding Customer Service
This year the Vice Chancellor’s Cup goes to the Sponsored Programs Team.
Our final award is the Vice Chancellor’s Cup to honor a team for outstanding customer service.
This year the Vice Chancellor’s Cup goes to the Sponsored Programs team. Members include Jamie Aldag, Ronda Alexander, Mardi Bonner, Calley Bundy, Kate Carlin, Abbey Creglow, Shelly Cutsor, Paul Davis, Charley Firestone, Aaron Funk, Craig Goodrich, Heather Hulinsky, Aurora Kenworthy, Anna Kincaid, Andrea Koeber, Ella Korlacka, Cassidy Kosena, Melina Luethje, Suzan Lund, Terri Murray, Kristen Ohnoutka, Marie Rhea, Ben Rogers, Bailey Rosberg, Brian Sabata, Dennis Shannon, Jr., Sam Swanson, Renee Welstead, and Jenny Zhang.
Imagine putting in years of training and hard work as a scientist building a record that finally gets you to the point of receiving a competitive federal grant, to then one day unexpectedly receive a notification that your grant is canceled – because the very science you care so deeply about is deemed no longer a priority or important. Imagine being a scholar working in the arts or the humanities, fields in which you sometimes wonder if your work is valued anyway, who one day learns nearly the entire portfolio of projects at your institution funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities were canceled. There is fear of whether any entity will ever again fund the type of scholarly work that you do. As many of you know, these things, and other stories like them, happened at UNL this past year.
The Office of Sponsored Programs team was the recipient of these startling messages from our federal agency partners. Many rules and expectations for how they do their jobs were turned upside down this past year. I am proud of how the team digested what was happening, consulted with peers (and with Laura!), was continuously learning – all so they could be a supportive face for faculty when they had to deliver all this bad news and help faculty find the way forward.
This is not all. There were periods during which the post-award team had to carefully maneuver receiving timely reimbursement for grant-funded work. As awards began flowing again, the terms of agreement were sometimes different than what we were used to, and then there was an extended government shutdown in the Fall. All the while, the Sponsored Programs team navigated significant leadership and personnel transition this year, with both Suzan and Shelly moving into their leadership roles, and new faces joining the team. Thank you for embracing change, process improvement, and learning new things no matter what role you have in the team – and looking for ways to build new efficiencies along the way, like integrating automation to your processes and improved tracking of things like zero-dollar agreements, so that we are serving the campus even better.
Please know I see how hard you are working, and colleagues around campus have been touched by your service during unprecedented times. Keep up the good work.

Conflict of Interest Compliance Specialist, her abilities to use professional, timely, and concise communication ensures that her knowledge in the areas of conflict of interest are implemented effectively through the Human Research Protection Program as a true partnership. Riley demonstrates professional expertise she has developed and her dedication to providing clear communication and understanding of the projects she is involved in. In addition to her daily COI job responsibilities, she also has gone above and beyond to take on tasks to learn and help out in compliance areas outside of her responsibilities, for example, assisting in the completion of meeting minutes for SROC meetings. There are truly no tasks too big or too small which Riley is willing to take on for the betterment of the RCS Office and our research at UNL.

Jen Nelson presented a Vice Chancellor’s Invaluable Service Award to Kelly Heath. Kelly is known for putting people and animals first. Dr. Heath is the Director and Attending Veterinarian for the Animal Care Program (ACP). This year he led a successful program re-accreditation for the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC). This is the highest peer review endorsement you can receive as an animal research institution. Kelly understands the value of building relationships and collaboration. Kelly oversees 12 staff members and of those nearly 60% are UNL graduates and 25% of them are former student workers that transitioned into a permanent role after graduation. This speaks volumes to the program that Kelly has grown and his commitment to establishing a culture to develop and retain talent at the University. Kelly prioritizes staff development. He has created three career ladder tracks for staff advancement, as well as incentivizing certifications to continue to elevate the team’s capabilities.

Jen Nelson presented a Vice Chancellor’s Invaluable Service Award to Heather Borck. Heather, research development program coordinator, is committed to ensuring R&I’s research development (RD) programming is second to none, and her contributions are moving the needle on faculty success. In the last year, Heather partnered with the NU Foundation to implement NU 2 Foundations, a new program to support proposers seeking private funding, and shepherded UNL’s NU 2 NIH program into the multi-institutional InterFACE “Faculty Academy for Competitive Excellence” Initiative, which supports faculty developing NIH R01 applications. Both programs are already bearing fruit, with 30 participants and one R01 funded to date. Heather also elevated NSF CAREER Club, contributing to a record nine CAREER awards in 2024. These programs depend on Heather’s exceptional drive to excel, work ethic, creativity, and collegiality. She is coordinating the annual Write Winning Grants seminar, establishing a master calendar of RD programming, and implementing more effective marketing and evaluation processes. The delivery of R&I’s many RD programs is complex, and Heather’s contributions are extraordinary in meeting the challenge.

Jen Nelson presented a Vice Chancellor’s Invaluable Service Award to Suzan Lund. Suzan is, and has been, a steady rock for the Sponsored Programs Pre-Award Team and Office. She’s navigated the changing landscape that is Research Administration for two decades at UNL and kept the ship not only afloat but on course during that time and has had a positive impact on many, if not all, departments, colleges, centers, units or otherwise, and countless faculty and staff along the way. How she has managed & continues to do so in her ever-changing role is mind-boggling!

Jen Nelson presented a Vice Chancellor’s Invaluable Service Award to Adam Eakin. Adam consistently goes above and beyond, delivering exceptional customer service with responsiveness and professionalism. His budgeting expertise is invaluable to the Museum, and he has expertly managed contract requests for several traveling exhibits. Adam has also taken on the oversight of construction and renovation projects at Morrill Hall, ensuring each project runs smoothly. His dedication, reliability, and kindness make him a cornerstone of our team and a steady presence that staff and visitors alike can rely on. In addition to his role, Adam recently joined the University’s mentorship program, volunteering his time to support and guide others in the University community. His commitment to service, both within and beyond the Museum, highlights his dedication to our shared mission. Adam’s hard work, adaptability, and positive impact on Morrill Hall make him an exemplary colleague and leader, contributing in countless ways to the success of our team.
2024 Vice Chancellor’s Cup for Outstanding Customer Service

This year the Vice Chancellor’s Cup goes to the Research Compliance Services Team. Members include Sara Quinn, Rachel Wenzl, Becky Freeman, Saumi Mathews, Joshua Renner, Erik Schulz, Kaela Evans, Eileen Boswell, and Riley Kimbrough. This team works across a number of complicated and often changing research compliance areas, including human research protection, conflict of interest, export control, research security, and research misconduct. In the past year, they have been true leaders on campus, such as in rolling out an updated COI/COC policy campus-wide. They have innovated in creative ways, such as through the creation of a human subjects consent form generator that increases efficiency and consistency, and in how we are approaching education of our research teams with changing research security and export control regulations. And they have taken full advantage of the transition of the IRB module to NuRamp to make improvements in how that system can best serve our research community. They do all of this by striking a careful balance between offering supportive communication to the research community while upholding the requirements of the compliance areas for which they are responsible. We cannot accept the research awards we work so hard to help our researchers obtain without this team helping to ensure projects are set up ethically, safely, and securely, in compliance with the expectations of our funding partners. Thank you, RCS team, for all you contribute to our R&I mission!
2023 Vice Chancellor’s Invaluable Service Award Winners

Sherri Jones presented a Vice Chancellor’s Invaluable Service Award to Melissa Bausch. Melissa in her role as Clinical Veterinarian in the IACP Team to provides exceptional customer service to research faculty customers. Dr. Jim MacDonald commented, “Dr. Melissa Bausch is more than our attending veterinarian, she is a valued member of our team. Our staff members don’t just call her when there is a problem; they seek out her input, so they know they are taking the best course of action for the animal and the research. Being a vet means coming in on weekends, holidays and bad weather- Melissa never hesitates. During a serious heat stress event this summer, Melissa put in hours overseeing veterinary care of the cattle. A veterinarian cares for both animals and their people, and she worked side by side with personnel through the event. Melissa bought water and electrolyte powder for the crew. She counseled and supported them through the physically and emotionally distressing circumstances. Melissa provides that personal touch to our investigators, students, and animal care staff in all our animal facilities.

Sherri Jones presented a Vice Chancellor’s Invaluable Service Award to Kate Carlin. Kate has been a stabilizing force for the OSP Pre-Award Team and has been an extremely important part of training new employees on the Pre-Award team. Kate Carlin has been an exceptional example of what others on our team should strive for. She is encouraging, forthright, and goes above and beyond to provide both her team and faculty members with outstanding service. Kate also has helped to drive process improvement for our group and is also the keeper of our “Big DATA” to pull meaning from the plethora of information in NuRamp. On top of it all, she almost always (almost!) has a smile on her face and cheery disposition no matter who she is engaging with – no small feat at times 🙂

Sherri Jones presented a Vice Chancellor’s Invaluable Service Award to Brenda Coufal.
Brenda is a very dedicated employee. She always gives 110% of herself to whatever it is that is in front of her. She faces each challenge and wants to make sure she is prepared for any unexpected issues that may arise. Brenda will make sure everyone has what they need to be prepared and look their best at any meeting, workshop or conference. She is a very detailed person and helps me to think about all the things that can be done ahead of time so that our important meetings go smoothly. She is a true inspiration to learn from and work with.

Sherri Jones presented a Vice Chancellor’s Invaluable Service Award to Brande Dicks. Brande takes it upon herself to provide exceptional support and service to the Morrison Center faculty. She quickly discerns their needs and moves efficiently to provide information, recommendations, or direction. She has worked weekends and nights in order to submit grants on time and her efforts have resulted in grants being awarded in the department. She is very organized, efficient, and always has a smile. I am impressed by how much she knows and is willing to help others in the department. She is a valued member to the department and to R&I.

She is active in the training and events and shares best practices and ideas with her teammates. She has been part of planning the recent “Inclusive Innovation” event series.

Sherri Jones presented a Vice Chancellor’s Invaluable Service Award to Erik Schulz. For the past four years, Erik Schulz has worked on the Research Compliance Services team as an Export Control Coordinator. Not only that, this team stands out in their willingness to go the extra mile to support animal welfare and our PIs. They have “find the yes” mindset that fuels them to figure out how to share responsibilities in a dynamic system and accomplish approved research objectives. They are always up for new challenges to support a diverse array of research projects, whether that is conducting complex anesthetic procedures or CT imaging anything from live anesthetized animals to corn kernels. They provide the daily attention and interactions necessary to keep this crucial research moving forward 365 days a year.
