Four representing Research in Staff Senate

The goal of the newly created UNL Staff Senate is to ensure staff have a voice and are represented on issues, institutional policies and practices that relate to them. Four senators were elected in fall 2022 to represent the Research district, which includes ORED, the University of Nebraska Press, the University of Nebraska State Museum, MERC, and several research centers.

District 7 representatives and their standing committee assignments are:

Senators participated in a training session in January, and the Senate convened for the first time on March 9. Full Senate meetings will occur bimonthly. Standing committees meet regularly to develop a vision and plans for bringing issues to the full Senate for consideration. As the Senate’s charge is solidified over the coming months, District 7 senators will provide further communication on Senate activities and solicit feedback and discussion with constituents. Staff are welcome to contact their senators at any time to suggest ideas.

Cheryl Horst Presented on a Panel at our Technology Transfer Professional Body’s Annual Conference (AUTM)

Pictured left to right: Michele Tyrpak, Stephen Gardner, and Cheryl Horst

Cheryl Horst, associate director and IP counsel for NUtech Ventures, moderated a standing-room-only panel with Stephen Gardner, an attorney for Quarles & Brady LLP, and Michele Tyrpak, director at the University of South Florida, at AUTM’s 2023 national conference in Austin, Texas on Tuesday, Feb.21. Cheryl and her panel discussed how the new virtual nature of life has led to increased levels of collaboration among researchers. It’s often the case that tech transfer professionals learn of data, software or an insight that came from a third party, and this can uncover complexities like joint ownership, additional inventors, requirements to notify others or share data or even implicate options and licenses.

The panelists reviewed the law of inventorship and recent case law differentiating mere prior art from inventive contributions among academic researchers. They also discussed issues arising when new inventors or new owners are discovered, including foreign filing requirements, inventor shares of revenue and ability to license the invention.
