Welcomes
Lisa Maupin started Sept. 12 as ORED’s new events and outreach manager. Lisa comes to us from the College of Arts and Sciences, where she provided event support to the Center for Great Plains Studies and the dean’s office since 2014. Lisa is excited to broaden her experience at the university and is looking forward to working with the great team in ORED.
KUDOS TO OUR COLLEAGUES
Rachel Wenzl, Research Compliance Services, gave a presentation at the ninth annual University of Nebraska Medical Center Hot Topics in the Protection of Human Subjects Conference, held Sept. 14. With Dan Hoyt, Husker sociology professor and director of the Social and Behavioral Sciences Research Consortium, Rachel presented “The Intersection Between Biomedical and Social Behavioral Educational Research: How one HRPP adapts.” Rachel pulled the presentation together with less than two weeks notice after a UNMC colleague asked for assistance — one of the other schedule speakers was ill and unable to make the conference. Thanks, Rachel, and great job representing ORED!

What is your title in ORED, and how long have you been part of the team?
Kristen: My title is financial specialist with the Research Finance team and I’ve been with ORED for 12 years.
Explain how your team fits into ORED’s overall mission.
Kristen: Research Finance manages commitments that help our faculty further pursue their research efforts. We manage internal research awards that help faculty pursue larger grants. We also help with several other finance areas within ORED.
What progress would you like to see ORED and/or Research Finance make over the next five years?
Kristen: I would like to see continued collaboration between ORED units and departments to help further our research goals.
What is your favorite part of working for the university?
Kristen: The people I work with every day.
What is your favorite line from a movie?
Kristen: “You’re killing me, Smalls!” from “The Sandlot.”
If you had to eat one meal every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Kristen: Macaroni and cheese, and bread.
What is your favorite childhood memory?
Kristen: My mom is originally from Maryland, and we would spend our summer family vacations in Ocean City, Maryland, with my grandparents. We always had to go to Dumser’s for the best ice cream, the Fractured Prune for the best doughnuts and Waterman’s for the best seafood. We spent the days at the beach and the nights on the boardwalk. These are some of my fondest childhood memories and it’s where I gained my love and fascination with the ocean and marine life.

Suzan Lund, Sponsored Programs: “NPR’s ‘Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me — a humorous weekly quiz show with comedian panelists, mostly about news of the week. So funny! I usually miss the regular air times, so binge on podcasts when I travel.”
Kacey Nelkin Pedersen, Sponsored Programs: “I love catching up on all my favorite shows aired on Lincoln’s community radio station, KZUM. If I have to pick just one, I’d choose ‘How’s It Growin’?,’ a weekly hour of armchair gardening answering listener questions and featuring expert guests. Bob and Bertine really know a lot about gardening in Lincoln and the unique things we eastern Nebraskans face in our backyards. They also have great, expert guests on the show, too!”
