Welcomes and Farewells

Tiffani Hix rejoined ORED on May 30. She is part of the Research Finance team, assisting centers with business processes and grants management from preparation through closeout. Welcome back, Tiffani!

The Office of Proposal Development welcomed three new proposal development specialists June 1:

Amanda Girres joins ORED after previously working as a general assignment reporter in Panora, Iowa. Amanda has a bachelor’s degree in English from Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa.

Alex Souliere, a lifelong Lincoln resident, is a graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan University, where he majored in English. He’s an avid fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team and is excited to leverage his new position at the university to acquire season tickets.

Ezra Stewart-Silver joins ORED after instructing federal election poll workers in Oakland, California; helping to develop virtual medical patients for an educational software company in Gainesville, Florida; and teaching English composition and rhetoric at Chiang Mai University in northern Thailand. Ezra has an MFA in creative writing from the University of Florida, the home of Gatorade as well as a local population of massive flying cockroaches. He is glad to no longer live in a town built on a swamp.

KUDOS TO OUR COLLEAGUES

Kate Carlin, Sponsored Programs, recently became a Certified Research Administrator. The CRA designation requires applicants to meet educational and experience criteria and demonstrate broad knowledge of research administration by passing an exam. Congratulations, Kate!

WATER COOLER CHAT

ORED is home to people with a wide range of artistic tastes. Here are the best performances your colleagues have ever seen live:

Craig Goodrich, Sponsored Programs: “Fleet Foxes. They’d broken up, so I never thought I would see them. They played for a solid two hours, including every song I’d hoped to hear and then some! (plus this will bug Abby!)”

Mardi Bonner, Sponsored Programs: “Trans-Siberian Orchestra by far because of all the different visual effects and the overall experiences I have shared with my daughter, and now my granddaughter, as well as some very good friends.”

Peter Stewart, Research Finance and Information Systems: “In September 2006, I attended the George Carlin comedy concert at the Lied Center. Noted for his dark humor and commentary on language, religion and politics, he was a longtime favorite of mine. He passed away two years after his appearance in Lincoln.”

Suzan Lund, Sponsored Programs: “Elvis. Because … Elvis! I was a kid and my parents took our family to one of his final concert tours in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in 1976. I didn’t really understand how big a deal it was, and balked a little at having to pay $5 of my own money toward the $15 ticket cost. Sure glad I did. Even though he was not as his peak, it was still an incredible performance.”

Amy Silvester-Brooks: “Having grown up listening to Neil Young, it was a dream come true to be able to see him live when he came to New Zealand. Very close seconds would be the Rolling Stones, Foo Fighters, Black Keys, Arctic Monkeys and Ed Sheeran – all amazing in very different ways.”

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan declared July to be National Ice Cream Month, and the third Sunday in July as National Ice Cream Day. What’s your favorite ice cream flavor or the best ice cream shop you’ve ever been to? Tell us here.

THE MONTH IN PICTURES

As of June 26, Lincoln had recorded 7.58 inches of rain for the month, which is more than it received in the first five months of the year combined. Jeff Wilkerson, Research Communications, captured this beautiful shot of Love Library on a clear day.
