Small Business Innovation workshops Oct. 11

Two "From Lab to Life" workshops in Lincoln and Omaha Oct. 11 will discuss opportunities offered by the National Institutes for Health Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program. The Lincoln workshop is at 4:15 p.m. at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln East Union on East Campus. Refreshments and networking will follow the presentation.

Both events are free to the public and will feature Jo Anne Goodnight, SBIR and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program coordinator of the NIH and the Department of Health and Human Services Public Health Service. SBIR and STTR are competitive grants awarded to small businesses to stimulate technological innovation.

Goodnight also is acting director for the Division of Special Programs in the Office of Extramural Research. She has held positions with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration. As an intramural research scientist at the National Cancer Institute, she published more than 20 research studies.

The Omaha "From Lab to Life" session will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing, 42nd Street and Dewey Avenue, in Room 1011/1012. A continental breakfast and networking will precede the workshop at 8 a.m.

Discussion topics will include:
  • Discovering what research NIH is seeking, what money is available and how to get proposals funded.
  • Learning how the pilot manufacturing assistance program, Commercialization Assistance Program (CAP) and Pipeline to Partnerships (P2P) help small businesses commercialize innovation.
  • Finding out how to stay informed about funding and partnerships opportunities, how to assess a partnership fit and important "dos and don'ts."
  • Learning about the services NIH programs offer to help move an idea into the marketplace, including identifying other uses for technologies, market strategies, strategic planning, alliance building and investor partnerships, and manufacturing and operational consulting.
