NU Press named Independent Publisher of the Year
During the prestigious ForeWord Book of the Year awards ceremony, ForeWord Magazine Publisher Victoria Sutherland called the University of Nebraska Press "a publisher that excelled in its role of keeper of the cultural heritage, a university publisher that has deliberately made a place for itself in the world of trade as the curator of consistently wonderful books in several special markets."
Those markets include literary translation -- the University of Nebraska Press translated both a novel and a short story collection by J.M.G. Le Clézio years prior to his winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2008, and will translate another of Le Clézio's short story collections next year. The University of Nebraska Press is also the publisher of award-winning fiction, memoir, history, poetry, Indigenous studies, and sports history, particularly baseball.
"This is a huge honor for the University of Nebraska Press, and one that we're very proud of, given there are many fine independent presses out there," said UNP director Donna Shear. "It's a testament to our authors and editors, and to everyone who works at the Press."
This is the second year that ForeWord Magazine, which is devoted to covering independent and university presses, has given the award.
Two University of Nebraska Press books were also recognized during the ceremony. The Wide Open: Prose, Poetry, and Photographs of the Prairie (Nebraska, 2008), edited by Annick Smith and Susan O'Connor, won the Gold Award in the anthology category; and Good Neighbors, Bad Times: Echoes of My Father's German Village (Nebraska, 2008), by Mimi Schwartz, won the Bronze Award in the autobiography and memoir category.
