These agreements are binding contracts that define the terms and conditions of the transfer, including limitations on use, storage requirements, publication rights, intellectual property considerations, and privacy or confidentiality protections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:2em\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull has-bg-lightest-gray-background-color has-background has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Are DTUAs and MTAs?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DTUAs<\/strong>&nbsp;govern the transfer of data, typically for research purposes, from one party (the \u201cProvider\u201d) to another (the \u201cRecipient\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MTAs<\/strong>&nbsp;govern the transfer of tangible research materials (e.g., biological samples, chemical compounds, software, devices) and may also include associated data. MTAs are used across disciplines such as biology, chemistry, engineering, and computer science.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:2em\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When Is an Agreement Needed?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Any time&nbsp;<strong>data or materials<\/strong>&nbsp;are being transferred between UNL and an external collaborator, a DTUA or MTA is likely required. These agreements help ensure that transfers align with university policies, protect intellectual property, and comply with applicable regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:2em\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull has-bg-lightest-gray-background-color has-background has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who Initiates the DTUA\/MTA Process?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<strong>Principal Investigator (PI)<\/strong>&nbsp;must initiate the process by completing the appropriate intake form in the <a href=\"https:\/\/nuramp.nebraska.edu\/\">NuRamp<\/a> Agreements module. (Note that someone can begin the form on behalf of the PI, but only the PI can submit it for review.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The intake forms collect key information about the project, the parties involved, and the nature of the transfer. The&nbsp;<strong>Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP)<\/strong>&nbsp;will review the submission and may consult with&nbsp;<strong>Research Compliance, Integrity, and Security (RCIS)<\/strong>&nbsp;to ensure all protocols are in place.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:2em\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Review Timeline<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The review and execution timeline for a DTUA and\/or MTA depends on the complexity of the request and the responsiveness of the external party. OSP and RCIS review intake forms in the order received; however, completing an agreement may take approximately 6\u20138 weeks from receipt, or longer for complex cases.
