


{"id":1596,"date":"2019-09-09T20:11:08","date_gmt":"2019-09-09T20:11:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.unl.edu\/researchcompliance\/?page_id=1596"},"modified":"2025-02-14T16:54:29","modified_gmt":"2025-02-14T16:54:29","slug":"unl-compliance-hotline","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/research.unl.edu\/researchcompliance\/unl-compliance-hotline\/","title":{"rendered":"UNL Compliance Hotline"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The\nUniversity of Nebraska-Lincoln is committed to the ethical conduct of research.\nAnyone internal or external to the University who knows of or suspects research\nis not being conducted in accordance with federal, state, or university\nrequirements should contact Research Compliance, Integrity, and Security by phone\n(402-472-6965) or <a href=\"mailto:sfrizzell2@unl.edu\">email<\/a>, or through the\nUNL Compliance Hotline as described below. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\npurpose of the UNL Compliance Hotline (1-844-348-9584 or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nebraska.ethicspoint.com\">www.nebraska.ethicspoint.com<\/a>) is to provide an additional communication\nchannel for reporting activity or conduct that may violate University of\nNebraska or UNL policies and procedures, and\/or federal, state or local laws\nand regulations. Concerns received through the compliance hotline will be\ninvestigated and appropriate follow-up actions taken.&nbsp;Examples of such\nconcerns might include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Violations of human subjects research protections<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Compliance concerns with the use of animals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Research or scholarly misconduct<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Breaches of physical or electronic research information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conflicts of interest or commitment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Concerns with export controlled research<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Internal Reporting Concerns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Faculty, staff, or students who have\ncompliance-related questions or concerns are encouraged to share them as soon\nas possible so an appropriate action may be taken. Multiple communication\nchannels are available for asking questions and reporting concerns. Whenever\npossible, faculty, staff and students are encouraged to obtain guidance or\nshare concerns with their supervisors first. However, they may use any of the\nfollowing communication channels:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Discuss the issue with supervisory personnel or a faculty advisor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contact the department that has subject matter expertise in the area of concern<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contact the Human Resources Department for human resources issues<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contact&nbsp; Research Compliance, Integrity, and Security at 402-472-6965<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contact the Institutional Animal Care Program (IACP) for research using animals at 402-472-4486<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Call the UNL Compliance Hotline or visit the website to report via an online format<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Call the <a href=\"https:\/\/nebraskalegislature.gov\/divisions\/ombud.php\">State of Nebraska Ombudsman\u2019s office<\/a> at 1-800-742-7690<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contact the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.unl.edu\/researchcompliance\/about-research-misconduct\/\">UNL Research Integrity Officer<\/a> regarding allegations of research misconduct<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Compliance Hotline<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Compliance Hotline is operated by a third-party organization hired to collect and document information provided by the caller or via an online web form. It operates seven days a week, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>For those using the online reporting form (<\/em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nebraska.ethicspoint.com\" target=\"_blank\"><em>www.nebraska.ethicspoint.com<\/em><\/a><em>):<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The\ncampus where the possible violation took place must be selected first.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The location of the\npossible violation must also be selected (City Campus, East Campus, or Other)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These selections will\nthen take the user to an Ethics Point webpage which provides a list of several\npossible violation areas that the user may choose from in order to make a\nreport<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The user can choose to\nremain anonymous <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>For those calling into the reporting number\n(1-844-348-9584):<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A pre-recorded message\nwill precede the operator answering the call to inform the caller that: (1)\ncalls are not recorded and no attempt is made to identify caller number or\nlocation; (2) UNL\u2019s policy prohibits retribution or retaliation for providing\ninformation; and (3) the caller may remain anonymous if desired.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The hotline operator\nwill: greet the caller and thank him\/her for calling; ask if the caller\nunderstood the message, answer any questions the caller may have; and reinforce\nthat the caller does not need to identify him\/herself. The operator will ask\nquestions based on the nature of each call to elicit the most complete\ninformation about each issue as possible, schedule any follow-up phone calls\nwhich may need to occur, notify the caller that the status of actions taken may\nnot be available to the caller, invite him\/her to phone the hotline if he\/she\nbelieves the problem has not been addressed or wishes to further discuss the\nsituation, and thank him\/her for calling.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The hotline company\nwill generate and provide a report to those with designated responsibility,\ndepending on the type of complaint. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Whether utilizing the online reporting format or calling into the hotline, users are strongly encouraged to provide as much detail as possible so that responsible parties are better able to investigate the concerns.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Confidentiality\/Good Faith Reporting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUNL shall attempt to maintain\nthe confidentiality of an individual who reports concerns or misconduct upon\nrequest. However, confidentiality cannot be guaranteed, and disclosure of the\nindividual&#8217;s identity may be necessary in order to fully investigate the concern.\nThere is no retribution or discipline for anyone who reports a concern in good\nfaith. Individuals shall not intentionally use the hotline to make false\nallegations.&nbsp;\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Compliance with Standards<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll UNL faculty, staff and\nstudents are expected to understand and follow regulations and policies\napplicable to their responsibilities.
