David Doty, ORED’s new director of sponsored programs, officially joined the team Nov. 25. He assumes the role previously held by Jeanne Wicks, who retired Oct. 31. David brings with him 28 years of experience in research administration. Most recently, he was associate director of sponsored programs at Colorado State University. Welcome to Nebraska, David!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kate Engel<\/strong>, Nebraska Innovation Campus, was awarded the Rising Star Award at the 2019 Association of University Research Parks International Conference at Georgia Tech\u2019s Tech Square. Kate is the first recipient of the Rising Star Award. This award recognizes an individual exhibiting significant contributions to the development and success of communities of innovation. Congrats, Kate!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rachel Wenzl<\/strong>, Research Compliance Services, spoke at the recent Advancing Ethical Research Conference sponsored by the Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research, Nov. 17-20 in Boston, Massachusetts. Along with John Baumann of Indiana University and Nichelle Cobb of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, both national experts in IRB and research regulation, Rachel presented “A Look into the Crystal Ball–The HRPP of the Future.” The presentation focused on how changes to the Common Role and policies at the National Institutes of Health will impact the human research protection programs. Thanks for representing ORED, Rachel!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next OPEN Book will come out at the beginning of January, so it seems natural to ask what everyone’s New Year’s resolutions are. But numerous studies show that most people are unlikely to stick to their resolutions — one study<\/a> by the time management firm FranklinCovey found that four out of five people break their resolutions and one-third do not even make it to the end of January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So in lieu of telling us about your goals for 2020, we ask in instead for a reflection on 2019: What was one of the biggest pleasant surprises you experienced during the year<\/a>? For instance, you were able to pick up a skill that you doubted your ability to master, you were dreading going to a conference but it was really good, or you were sad when your boss left for a new job but their replacement turned out to be great. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question is part of Psychology Today’s 20 Enjoyable End-of-Year Review Questions<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
