The <a href=\"https:\/\/news.unl.edu\/newsrooms\/today\/article\/nebraska-lectures-expand-to-celebrate-n150\/\">extended format<\/a> is made possible with support from Humanities Nebraska and the National Endowment for the Humanities Chairman\u2019s Statehood Grants Initiative. Many of the 2019 talks focus on the origins and history of the state and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.<\/p>\n<p>Summaries and videos of the spring lectures are available below. Lecture podcasts are available via <a href=\"https:\/\/mediahub.unl.edu\/channels\/29667\">Mediahub<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>January: Nebraska\u2019s Unicameral: Still Progressive after All These Years?<\/h2>\n<p>Charlyne Berens, professor emeritus and former associate dean of the College of Journalism and Mass Communications, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.unl.edu\/newsrooms\/today\/article\/berens-opens-n150-nebraska-lecture-series\/\">examined how a single-house system<\/a> has allowed Nebraska to historically avoid partisan gridlock that exists in other legislative bodies. She also delved deeper into the history behind the Unicameral\u2019s formation and assessed whether the system continues to meet the goals of its founders.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1600\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/H-3jpjgmSiM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>February: Building Nebraska U: The Saga of University Hall and the Origins of the Modern University<\/h2>\n<p>Kay Logan-Peters, professor of libraries and creator of an online tour of the university\u2019s architectural history, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.unl.edu\/newsrooms\/today\/article\/logan-peters-takes-300-on-historic-tour\/\">discussed the colorful history<\/a> of early campus architecture. Logan-Peters\u2019 lecture included an NET-produced, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.unl.edu\/newsrooms\/today\/article\/virtual-reality-project-draws-university-hall-back-to-campus\/\">virtual reality tour<\/a> around the exterior of University Hall, the first building on campus. Nearly 300 attended the Charter Week lecture.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1600\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fuOHJjspY4E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>March: Grace and Edith Abbott: Nebraska\u2019s Social Justice Sisters<\/h2>\n<p>John Sorensen, author and founder of the Abbott Sisters Project, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.unl.edu\/newsrooms\/today\/article\/social-justice-sisters-featured-in-next-nebraska-lecture\/\">explained the importance of the Abbott sisters<\/a> to the history of children\u2019s, immigrants\u2019 and women\u2019s rights in America. Sorensen, a film director, is a Grand Island, Nebraska, native.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1600\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4cG2zfn0lbo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>April: The Hearts of Foreigners: How Americans Understand Others<\/h2>\n<p>Tim Borstelmann, E.N. and Katherine Thompson Professor of Modern World History, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.unl.edu\/newsrooms\/today\/article\/borstelmann-expounds-on-americas-growing-inclusivity\/\">took viewers on a journey<\/a> through the past two centuries and demonstrated how American citizens have embraced foreigners to become a \u201cradically inclusive society.\u201d Borstelmann\u2019s lecture is the basis of his upcoming book, \u201cThe Hearts of Foreigners: How Americans Understand Others,\u201d coming out in 2020.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1600\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NZEDMzUKqw8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As part of the university\u2019s 150th anniversary celebration, the Nebraska Lectures: Chancellor\u2019s Distinguished Speakers Series features 12 presentations in 2019.
