Workshop Overview

Each year, the Office of Research and Economic Development (ORED) sponsors an early career award workshop for faculty aimed at providing prospective grant applicants with: 1) proposal writing advice from knowledgeable administrators and early career award recipients and 2) information about resources available at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) to support the development of grant applications.

This year, the workshop will focus on preparing competitive proposals to the National Science Foundation (NSF)'s Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program. This event will feature an overview of the NSF CAREER Program and a panel discussion with NSF CAREER awardees. The panel will be followed by a complementary lunch during which attendees will have an opportunity to network with current and previous CAREER awardees, administrators, and staff from UNL's Office of Proposal Development. The workshop agenda is as follows.

11:00 a.m. to 11:05 a.m.  - Welcome and Opening Remarks
11:05 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. - Overview of the NSF CAREER Award Program
11:15 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. - Faculty Panel of NSF CAREER Awardees: Tips for Writing a Successful NSF CAREER Proposal
12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. - Networking Lunch and Presentation on Resources at UNL to Support CAREER Proposal Development

The workshop will also serve as the kick-off event for ORED's 2019 NSF CAREER Club, which will provide a range of targeted support throughout the spring semester and into the summer for those developing NSF CAREER applications. Other planned activities for the club include Portal to the Public training in partnership with the University of Nebraska State Museum, a Campus Community Connector event focused on building Broader Impacts partnerships, a lunch presentation focused on evaluating Broader Impacts, and one-on-one consultation on the development of NSF CAREER proposals with staff from the Office of Proposal Development. UNL faculty interested in participating in the 2019 NSF CAREER Club are strongly encouraged to attend the February 28 workshop.

The workshop will be held on Thursday, February 28, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Regency Suite of the Nebraska City Union. The workshop is free and open to University of Nebraska faculty and administrators. Please register for the workshop by Thursday, February 21.
