These factors influenced migration and settlement in the U.S. and helped redefine the relationships between government, industry and citizens. However, Elliot argues, the American West\u2019s historical significance is often overshadowed by the Civil War and Reconstruction, even though happenings in the West impacted those events as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignwide is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Continental Reckoning: The American West in the Age of Expansion\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/n0vSgV_lUQw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>West, Alumni Distinguished Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Arkansas, is considered one of the best historians and writers of the American West by his peers.
