

{"id":61,"date":"2023-10-02T17:55:25","date_gmt":"2023-10-02T17:55:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2023\/?p=61"},"modified":"2023-10-24T20:27:20","modified_gmt":"2023-10-24T20:27:20","slug":"food","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2023\/food\/","title":{"rendered":"Strengthening local food systems"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Underserved rural communities often lack access to affordable, healthy foods, a problem exacerbated by supply-chain issues during the COVID pandemic.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A new regional initiative aims to connect and strengthen locally grown food systems to enhance healthy food options, nutrition and local economies. Nebraska is establishing the Heartland Regional Food Business Center with $25 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It\u2019s among the university\u2019s largest ever awards.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The center will serve Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and\u202fIowa. It\u2019s one of 12 food business centers the USDA established nationwide with funds from the American Rescue Plan Act.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of physical locations, the centers will be online portals providing information, resources and connections for those involved in regional food production and distribution. Food scarcity in urban settings is another piece of the puzzle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"quote_paragraph\"><span class=\"fade_in_text\">\u201cWe want to get the message out to producers<\/span><span class=\"fade_in_text\"> who are producing fresh foods for local markets <\/span><span class=\"fade_in_text\">that there are resources out there for you,<\/span><span class=\"fade_in_text\"> and we\u2019re going to make it easier<\/span><span class=\"fade_in_text\"> for you to find them,\u201d<\/span><span class=\"fade_in_text\"> Emery said. <\/span><span class=\"fade_in_text\">\u201cTo food consumers, <\/span><span class=\"fade_in_text\">we want to say we\u2019re going to help you find more and better local, <\/span><span class=\"fade_in_text\">healthy\u202ffoods.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The center\u2019s partners include universities, extension programs and regional nonprofits.
