Mellon Foundation supports the project. It is led by William Thomas, Angle Chair in the Humanities and professor of history; Katrina Jagodinsky, Susan J. Rosowski Associate Professor of history; and Jeannette Eileen Jones, Carl A. Happold Associate Professor of history and ethnic studies. They are collaborating with College of Law scholars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is the largest arts and humanities research grant in the university\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/230124_Mellon_Grant_019-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-301\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/230124_Mellon_Grant_019-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/230124_Mellon_Grant_019-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/230124_Mellon_Grant_019-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/230124_Mellon_Grant_019-1200x801.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/230124_Mellon_Grant_019.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">William Thomas, Jeannette Eileen Jones and Katrina Jagodinsky<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The goal is to help students and the public understand how marginalized groups in American history \u2013 enslaved people, racial minorities, women and Indigenous people, among others \u2013 used the law to contest and advance their rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"quote_paragraph\"><span class=\"fade_in_text\">\u201cThere are a few landmark cases <\/span><span class=\"fade_in_text\">that students encounter,\u201d <\/span><span class=\"fade_in_text\">Thomas said. <\/span><span class=\"fade_in_text\">\u201cBut think of the thousands <\/span><span class=\"fade_in_text\">of courthouses around the United States. <\/span><span class=\"fade_in_text\">This is the biggest set of historical evidence <\/span><span class=\"fade_in_text\">that\u2019s untapped in American history. <\/span><span class=\"fade_in_text\">We want to bring it into the light, <\/span><span class=\"fade_in_text\">share it and talk about it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new curriculum includes an entry-level, team-taught course focused on race in American law and history, called \u201cAnd Justice for All.\u201d It\u2019s the first of its kind at the university. Undergraduates can also take upper-level courses with experiential components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For graduate students, the program offers a non-degree certificate, \u201cU.S. Law and Race,\u201d available internationally. With community partners Vision Maker Media and the Institute of Politics, Policy and History at the University of the District of Columbia, the team will produce multimedia content and documentaries.
