

{"id":35,"date":"2023-10-02T17:48:38","date_gmt":"2023-10-02T17:48:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2023\/?p=35"},"modified":"2023-10-31T17:07:53","modified_gmt":"2023-10-31T17:07:53","slug":"undergrads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2023\/undergrads\/","title":{"rendered":"Creating a culture where \u2018at-promise\u2019 students thrive"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>First-generation, low-income and underrepresented racial and ethnic minority university students are often termed \u201cat risk.\u201d That\u2019s because their academic success and degree completion rates persistently lag behind their peers, despite programs and resources designed to close equity gaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"quote_paragraph\"><span class=\"fade_in_text\">Nebraska is trying a new approach.<\/span><span class=\"fade_in_text\"> It starts with changing<\/span><span class=\"fade_in_text\"> the way the university<\/span><span class=\"fade_in_text\"> characterizes these students,<\/span><span class=\"fade_in_text\"> said project leader Amy Goodburn,<\/span><span class=\"fade_in_text\"> senior associate vice chancellor<\/span><span class=\"fade_in_text\"> and dean of undergraduate education.<\/span><span class=\"fade_in_text\"> They\u2019re better cast as<\/span><span class=\"fade_in_text\"> \u201cat-promise\u201d students.<span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re only at risk if we don\u2019t create a culture in which they can thrive,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This terminology shift is one facet of Nebraska\u2019s push to remake its culture for these students, who bring an array of unique, but often underrecognized, strengths to campus. The overhaul is based on the ecology of validation framework, a model stemming from extensive research on at-promise students at the University of Nebraska\u2019s Lincoln, Omaha and Kearney campuses. The research is being conducted by the Pullias Center for Higher Education at the University of Southern California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The framework focuses on proactively identifying students who need support and connecting them to resources in a holistic, proactive way tailored to their individual strengths and identities. It\u2019s a major departure from traditional approaches focused on services and resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStudents have no idea how to navigate the resources available to them,\u201d Goodburn said. \u201cResearch shows that it doesn\u2019t matter which programs exist. Navigators look for red flags \u2013 a student who hasn\u2019t signed up for academic advising, for example, or a student who drops a course late \u2013 and offer help at these pivotal moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The university also deployed Student Success Hub, part of the campus&#8217;s constituent relationship management system Salesforce, to communicate more effectively with all students. It enables targeted messaging and robust data collection on emails and texts, shedding light on which messages are most effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Identifying practices that can be carried out nationally to better support at-promise students&#8217; degree completion is a major goal. Goodburn\u2019s team is documenting its efforts to help campus units and other institutions adopt and tailor the framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team includes Bill Watts, associate dean for student success, and Joseph Lynch, director of the Academic Navigators.
