He came to UNL from Purdue University where he was a distinguished professor of chemistry and of earth and atmospheric sciences.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_441\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-441\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2014\/collaborative-culture-appeals-to-francisco\/140715_francisco_028_1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-441\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-441 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/140715_Francisco_028_1-400x600.jpg\" alt=\"140715_Francisco_028_1\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/140715_Francisco_028_1-400x600.jpg 400w, https:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/140715_Francisco_028_1-900x1350.jpg 900w, https:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/140715_Francisco_028_1.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-441\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Joe Francisco<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of discussion in higher education about working across disciplines,\u201d he said. \u201cUNL is taking a leadership role in advancing innovative research at the cutting edge across multiple disciplines, and that is exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Francisco is former president of the American Chemical Society and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. He\u2019s won several prestigious research and teaching honors, including an American Association for the Advancement of Science Mentor Award and a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship. Francisco was president of the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers from 2006 to 2008.<\/p>\n<p>He earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in chemistry at the University of Texas at Austin and a doctorate in chemical physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.<\/p>\n<p>UNL\u2019s sincere commitment to diversity appealed to Francisco.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is part of my core values,\u201d he said. \u201cI saw that as an opportunity where I could bring some leadership to the university and the college as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But he\u2019s been most impressed by the faculty\u2019s passion for their work and for educating students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany important, forward-thinking programs and innovations have originated at Nebraska in the College of Arts and Sciences.
