



{"id":953,"date":"2013-10-10T16:47:20","date_gmt":"2013-10-10T16:47:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2013\/?p=953"},"modified":"2013-11-05T20:01:25","modified_gmt":"2013-11-05T20:01:25","slug":"innovation-campus-emerging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2013\/innovation-campus-emerging\/","title":{"rendered":"<h1>Innovation Campus<\/h1> <h2>Emerging<\/h2>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With its first corporate partner on board, more partnerships in the works and the first buildings slated to open in spring 2014, Nebraska Innovation Campus is generating abundant buzz.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cInnovation Campus has a lot of traction,\u201d said UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman. \u201cWe\u2019re extremely pleased with the interest and enthusiasm for our plans to create a research campus that enhances opportunities for private business to access faculty research to develop marketable innovations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officials announced in November 2012 that ConAgra Foods, a leading food company, is NIC\u2019s first corporate partner. The partnership is part of an expanded collaboration between ConAgra and UNL designed to foster a culture of innovation related to food science.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement kicked off Phase I construction at the 232-acre private-public research campus adjacent to UNL. NIC is being developed as a world-class conduit for innovation \u2013 connecting companies, entrepreneurs and university researchers and students in a collaborative environment to help fuel Nebraska\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<div class=\"imageBlock\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2013\/innovation-campus-emerging\/nic_phase-i_9-13-13\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1299\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1299\" alt=\"NIC_Phase I_9-13-13\" src=\"http:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2013\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/NIC_Phase-I_9-13-13-900x448.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2013\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/NIC_Phase-I_9-13-13-900x448.jpg 900w, https:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2013\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/NIC_Phase-I_9-13-13-450x224.jpg 450w, https:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2013\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/NIC_Phase-I_9-13-13.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cFor ConAgra Foods to be the first major partner at Nebraska Innovation Campus is a rare opportunity that we could not pass up,\u201d said Gary Rodkin, chief executive officer of ConAgra.<\/p>\n<p>Nebraska-based ConAgra is an ideal inaugural partner, Perlman said, and an excellent fit for NIC\u2019s focus on food, fuel and water, traditional research strengths at UNL.<\/p>\n<p>Four buildings being constructed or renovated in Phase I will provide 350,000 square feet of lab, greenhouse, office and conference space, said Dan Duncan, NIC\u2019s executive\u00a0director. The renovated former 4-H Building and new companion wing will open in spring 2014. The repurposed Industrial Arts Building and a laboratory building with labs for the university, private industry and startup companies are slated to open in winter 2015.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to ConAgra, early NIC tenants will include the university\u2019s Robert B.
