{"id":58,"date":"2012-11-05T15:52:42","date_gmt":"2012-11-05T15:52:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2012\/?p=58"},"modified":"2012-11-28T15:46:50","modified_gmt":"2012-11-28T15:46:50","slug":"building-for-the-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2012\/building-for-the-future\/","title":{"rendered":"<h1>Building for the Future<\/h1>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the University of Nebraska\u2013Lincoln, we\u2019re charting a course for growth.<\/p>\n<p>UNL research has grown significantly in the past decade, our faculty\u2019s research accomplishments have been remarkable, and we have forged private and public partnerships that span the globe. This report highlights some of these successes.<\/p>\n<p>Building on this momentum, we\u2019ve set ambitious goals to expand research by 2017. Our vision:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Enhance the quality and stature of UNL research, scholarship and creative activity.<\/li>\n<li>Increase the number of faculty working with private-sector partners to translate research into innovations and jobs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We\u2019re capitalizing on our strengths and targeting new areas where we have significant expertise. This report highlights our research leadership in areas such as education and child development, entrepreneurship, digital humanities, food safety, water and food security, survey research, nanoscience and virology. It also features examples of emerging initiatives, including agriculture and natural resources policy and unmanned aerial vehicles research.<\/p>\n<div class=\"imageBlock\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/92k2mzNlfiY?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Research and discovery are well-documented economic drivers. Nebraska Innovation Campus, the private-public research campus being developed at UNL, will ensure our research plays a bigger role in Nebraska\u2019s economy. But our partnerships with business, industry and entrepreneurs are diverse and aren\u2019t limited to NIC. UNL Industry Relations, NUtech Ventures and NIC work closely to forge strong, mutually beneficial partnerships.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re also thinking globally, expanding our international engagement through research, partnerships and student and faculty exchanges. You\u2019ll find examples of our robust international collaborations throughout this report.<\/p>\n<p>UNL also is making strides in developing state-of-the-art facilities essential to world-class research. The Voelte-Keegan Nanoscience Research Center, opened in 2012, is fueling UNL\u2019s momentum in nanotechnology and materials science. And an addition to the Ken Morrison Life Sciences Research Center, home to the Nebraska Center for Virology, will be finished in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Also to be completed in 2013 is multidisciplinary research space that is part of the expansion of Memorial Stadium, home to Husker football. It\u2019s central to a unique partnership between research and athletics that promises to expand understanding of the brain and concussions, enhance health and performance research and offer a national model for such collaborations.<\/p>\n<p>At UNL, we\u2019re building for the future to create the knowledge-fueled solutions essential to our state, our nation and our world.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2012\/building-for-the-future\/premsig\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-64\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-64\" title=\"premsig\" src=\"http:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2012\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/premsig.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"115\" height=\"49\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Prem S.
