


{"id":259,"date":"2012-11-14T18:49:13","date_gmt":"2012-11-14T18:49:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2012\/?p=259"},"modified":"2012-11-28T17:34:04","modified_gmt":"2012-11-28T17:34:04","slug":"american-exchange-center-opens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2012\/american-exchange-center-opens\/","title":{"rendered":"<h1>American Exchange Center Opens<\/h1>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chinese students and faculty are getting better acquainted with American culture through a new American Exchange Center at Xi\u2019an Jiaotong University, which deepens the University of Nebraska\u2019s collaboration with China.<\/p>\n<p>Opened in April 2012, the center is an NU-wide effort to expose Chinese faculty and students to U.S. history, law, medicine, art, culture and government. It\u2019s part of the university\u2019s strategy to strengthen relationships with key nations that will benefit Nebraska and the world.<\/p>\n<div class=\"imageBlock\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2012\/american-exchange-center-opens\/china\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-276\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-post-feature wp-image-276\" title=\"china\" src=\"http:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2012\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/china-900x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2012\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/china-900x600.jpg 900w, https:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2012\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/china-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Harvey Perlman, UNL chancellor (left), and Zheng Nanning, Xi\u2019an Jiaotong University president<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe students in Chinese universities today will be the government and business leaders of China tomorrow, and cultural understanding is an essential ingredient to peaceful and constructive relationships,\u201d NU President James B. Milliken said.<\/p>\n<p>Through the center, NU\u2019s four campuses will provide lectures, events, cultural performances and instructional courses at the university and in Xi\u2019an and Shaanxi Province. It also will sponsor student exchanges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur partner, Xi\u2019an Jiaotong University, has created a physical space that is far beyond our expectations and will serve us well in the years ahead as we bring American culture and perspectives to China,\u201d UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman said. Perlman led NU\u2019s exchange center proposal, one of only 10 nationwide to earn U.S. State Department seed funding.<\/p>\n<p>A leading research university, Xi\u2019an Jiaotong has more than 30,000 students. Xi\u2019an, population 10 million, is China\u2019s third \u201cinternational city,\u201d but has had less exposure to American culture than Beijing or Shanghai. The center will host educational events that provide a broader view of U.S. history and culture than popular films or television.<\/p>\n<p>The center operates much like UNL\u2019s Confucius Institute, another partnership with Xi\u2019an Jiaotong, which promotes Chinese language, culture and history.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1>New Beijing Office<\/h1>\n<p>An office in Beijing expands UNL\u2019s ability to work with China on agriculture, food security and natural resource challenges.<\/p>\n<p>UNL\u2019s Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources opened an office at China\u2019s State Administration of Grain, or SAG, in June 2012. An agreement with SAG provides greater access to Chinese universities for research collaborations in UNL\u2019s areas of strength, including agricultural biosciences, food science and technology, engineering, water and animal sciences. Student and faculty exchanges also are planned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will provide a platform to work together on important agricultural problems in a coordinated and synergistic way,\u201d said Ronnie Green, Harlan Vice Chancellor for IANR and University of Nebraska vice president.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement also strengthens the Nebraska Department of Agriculture\u2019s efforts to expand opportunities for Nebraska businesses in China.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a vision of working side by side with the university to boost relationships for Nebraska companies,\u201d said Greg Ibach, Nebraska Department of Agriculture director.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chinese students and faculty are getting better acquainted with American culture through a new American Exchange Center at Xi\u2019an Jiaotong University, which deepens the University of Nebraska\u2019s collaboration with China.
