Daugherty Water for Food Institute perfectly encapsulates what is unique and vital about the University of Nebraska\u2019s new institution, said Roberto Lenton, DWFI\u2019s founding executive director.<\/p>\n<p>While many people worry about future food security, the water needed to produce food \u2013 whether for crops, livestock or fisheries \u2013 gets less attention. Yet water will be a pivotal factor in producing enough food to feed a world population that is expected to double by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe importance of this institute is connecting the concerns about food with the concerns about water,\u201d said Lenton, an international expert in water management and development who became director in 2012. The institute was established in 2010 with a $50 million gift commitment from the Robert B. Daugherty Charitable Foundation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"imageBlock\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2012\/institute-connects-water-food-concerns\/120712_lenton_009\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-222\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-222\" title=\"120712_Lenton_009\" src=\"http:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2012\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/120712_Lenton_009-900x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2012\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/120712_Lenton_009-900x600.jpg 900w, https:\/\/research.unl.edu\/annualreport\/2012\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/120712_Lenton_009-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Roberto Lenton<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Focusing on research, education and policy, DWFI involves faculty from all four NU campuses under the unifying theme of \u201cmore food with less water.\u201d By encouraging interdisciplinary collaborations around a central theme, Lenton hopes to inspire ideas that put NU at the forefront of solving this daunting global challenge.<\/p>\n<p>Nebraska is the ideal location for the institute, Lenton said. NU\u2019s tradition of merging research with practice has led to much ingenuity at both the university and farm levels.
