Research fellows program seeking applicants

The Office of Research and Economic Development is seeking applicants for the 2010-11 Research Development Fellows Program, an initiative to help pre-tenure UNL faculty successfully compete for grants.

Nov. 20 is the application deadline. The application form is available online.

The program, which is entering its second year, provides practical information and experience pre-tenure faculty need to successfully compete for grants. The yearlong program helps fellows enhance their proposal development skills and prepare a complete proposal for submission. more ...

UNL's ARRA efforts are paying off

UNL's aggressive pursuit of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding is paying off. UNL faculty were awarded $15.7 million in federal grants funded by federal stimulus legislation through Sept. 30, the end of the first quarter of record-keeping for ARRA awards. more ...

ARRA funding support and success

Through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, our country is providing unprecedented funding for research. As of Sept. 30, UNL faculty had received 45 ARRA grants totaling more than $15.7 million, and we are awaiting more good news on pending proposals.

This funding is crucial for our nation's research infrastructure and capacity if we are to collectively address society's greatest challenges and improve the well-being of our people, our environment and our economy. ARRA funding also is expanding opportunities for our students to work with faculty on research and scholarship that hones their critical thinking skills and provides valuable firsthand experience.

Microsoft exec visits UNL

Srini Koppolu, corporate vice president and managing director of Microsoft India Development Center in Hyderabad, visited UNL in September.

He met with faculty and students and gave a public lecture, “Microsoft in India – The R&D Journey.” Koppolu toured the Schorr Center to learn about UNL's research computing resources and met with faculty to learn more about their research. A UNL delegation led by Chancellor Harvey Perlman met Koppolu during a trip to India early this year and invited him to visit UNL when he was in the U.S.

Material transfer agreements recommended

Transfer of materials between labs is an essential part of scientific collaboration. When a colleague asks for a plasmid you described in your latest paper or you need a proprietary cell line from a company, you want transfer of that material to be as easy as possible. Doing a bit of paperwork up front can save you many headaches in the future.

A material transfer agreement ensures your work is properly acknowledged, your materials are not commercialized or transferred elsewhere without your consent, and you are not held liable for damages caused by use of the material.

MTAs between academic institutions are typically simple, involve no fee and will not conflict with your responsibilities as an author or significantly slow your research. In fact, you may be able to send and receive materials under prenegotiated terms already agreed upon by UNL and many other universities.

NU Press honors faculty, staff contributions

The Office of Research and Economic Development recently honored faculty and staff for their contributions to the University of Nebraska Press.

Joan Giesecke, dean of University Libraries, was recognized for her service as interim director of the press. Prem Paul, vice chancellor for research and economic development, thanked Giesecke for her leadership and willingness to serve the university in these two key roles for several months during the 2008-09 academic year. Press director Donna Shear and Senior Vice Chancellor Barbara Couture also thanked Giesecke for her strong support of the press.

An updated version of NSF's Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide, NSF 09-29, takes effect today (April 6).

The update includes a substantive revision regarding NSF's implementation of the postdoctoral mentoring plan required by the America COMPETES Act. Beginning April 6, each NSF proposal that requests funding to support postdoctoral researchers must include - as a separate supplementary document - a description of the mentoring activities that will be provided for such individuals. more ...
