The U.S. has a one-year grace period following public disclosure for filing a patent application. In the rest of the world, a public disclosure of information about how the invention works renders it unpatentable.

A patent awards a temporary monopoly to an inventor in exchange for information not previously known to the public about how the invention works.

The first step in safeguarding your invention is to file a technology disclosure form with NUtech Ventures. Forms are available at NUtechVentures.org at the bottom left of the home page.
The U.S. patent system is a first-to-invent system rather than a first-to-file system, which is followed in all other countries. In foreign countries, the first person to file an application is presumed to be the inventor and no evidence or arguments to the contrary can be given weight. In the U.S., however, even if another party files for a patent on an invention before the true inventor does, the inventor can still claim the patent if he or she has documentation and evidence to establish prior invention.
more ... Wed, 1 Sep 2010 14:00:00 GMT Dwyer honored for most influential paper http://research.unl.edu/researchnews/September2010/story.php?ID=nn-dwyer Matthew Dwyer, professor of computer science and engineering, received the 2010 Most Influential Paper Award from the International Conference on Software Engineering for his contributions to "Bandera: Extracting Finite-state Models from Java Source Code."
more ... Wed, 1 Sep 2010 14:00:00 GMT Use NUgrant for internal funding applications http://research.unl.edu/researchnews/September2010/story.php?ID=rr-internalfund Applications for internal funding opportunities offered by the Office of Research and Economic Development and the UNL Research Council now must be submitted through NUgrant, UNL’s online grants management system.
more ... Wed, 1 Sep 2010 14:00:00 GMT New NIH policy on post-submission materials http://research.unl.edu/researchnews/September2010/story.php?ID=rr-nih The National Institutes of Health has revised its policy restricting post-submission grant application materials.
