New NSF font requirements

If you're an NSF investigator, you'll want to familiarize yourself with the agency's new Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide (NSF 07-140). The guide, which took effect June 1, contains updated information about NSF's proposal preparation and submission guidelines.

A key change to NSF's proposal preparation instructions pertains to the use of designated fonts. According to the Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide, investigators may no longer use Times New Roman in NSF grant proposals.

Typefaces that meet the agency’s current font requirements are:
  • For Windows users: Arial, Helvetica, Palatino Linotype or Georgia
  • For Macintosh users: Arial, Helvetica, Palatino or Georgia
  • For TeX users: Computer Modern
NSF also restricts type size to 10 points or larger and requires a type density of no more than six lines per vertical inch. You may insert Greek letters or special characters using a Symbol font as long as type density requirements are met. Proposals submitted to NSF that do not conform to these guidelines may be returned without review.

The Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide also outlines updated award policies and procedures.
