Inaugural tech development faculty forum successful

Exploring ways to enhance UNL's "chain of innovation" was the focus of the first-ever Faculty Forum on Technology Development that drew about 60 faculty, staff and students in April.

Sponsored by the Office of Research, the day-long session offered faculty the opportunity to learn more about services offered by the Offices of Research Responsibility, Sponsored Programs and Technology Development, and how these services can assist their research and technology development efforts. The goal was finding more effective ways for faculty and the Office of Research to partner to create a "chain of innovation." That chain begins with proposal development and ends with commercialization of inventions that arise from UNL research.

In opening remarks, Chancellor Harvey Perlman and Vice Chancellor for Research Prem Paul outlined the importance of innovation in the university community. John Brasch, associate vice chancellor for technology development, provided an overview of the revamped Office of Technology Development. Other speakers explained services offered by Sponsored Programs and Research Responsibility and how these offices can assist faculty. Entrepreneurs, attorneys and technology transfer professionals offered perspectives on the successful commercialization of UNL technologies. The day concluded with a networking reception sponsored by the Nebraska Angels, a new independent consortium of individuals interested in promising early-stage companies.

The Office of Technology Development is planning a related technology development session during fall and spring semesters. These will be offered on both City and East Campus to better accommodate interested postdoctoral fellows and graduate students.
