NIH seeks comments on improving peer review

The National Institutes of Health is asking researchers for suggestions about how to improve its peer review process for grant applications.

"The NIH is seeking comments regarding NIH's support of the biomedical and behavioral research, including peer review, with the goal of examining the current system to optimize its efficiency and effectiveness. The NIH is especially interested in creative suggestions, even if they involve radical changes to the current approach," NIH said in its information request. See the official Request for Information for details.

The agency is looking for ways to reduce the workload for both reviewers and applicants in the face of increasingly numerous and complex applications. "NIH wants to ensure that the most meritorious science is supported while minimizing bureaucratic burden on applicants and the NIH itself," the announcement said.

Responses will be accepted until Aug. 17 through this NIH Web site or by e-mailing PeerReviewRFI@mail.nih.gov.
