Great lineup for Research Fair April 1-3A variety of presentations and events for faculty, staff and students are on tap for the sixth annual UNL Research Fair, a celebration of research and creativity, April 1-3 at the Nebraska Union.The fair features presentations by representatives from federal agencies on research needs, opportunities and priorities, talks by experts on a variety of topics and celebrations of faculty achievements. Students will present their research in graduate and undergraduate poster sessions and participate in other activities. "Research Fair is becoming a springtime tradition on campus," said Prem Paul, vice chancellor for research and economic development. "It's a great opportunity to recognize our faculty's many achievements and learn firsthand from federal program officers. We have a great lineup this year. I encourage our faculty, staff and students to take in as many events as possible." The complete schedule and speakers' bios are available on the Research Fair Web site. About a dozen speakers, including representatives from the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health and National Endowment for the Humanities, will present during the fair, including: On April 1 at 10:45 a.m. James Herrington, director of the division of international relations for the Fogarty International Center at NIH will present "Science for Global Health Research: The Future is Now." Herrington will discuss the impact of disease worldwide and projections on global health research needs, and outline the Fogarty International Center's work and research opportunities. Joan Ferrini-Mundy, director of NSF's Division of Elementary, Secondary and Informational Education in the Directorate for Education and Human Resources, who will speak at 1:30 p.m. April 1 on "Transforming Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Learning: Issues and Opportunities." Brett Bobley, chief information officer for the National Endowment for the Humanities and director of the agency's Digital Humanities Initiative, who will present "A Candid Chat about Digital Humanities Opportunities at NEH" at 2:45 p.m. April 1. April 2 begins with "What Every Researcher Needs to Know about Managing Research at UNL," a panel discussion for faculty and staff who want to learn more about research administration at UNL. This discussion includes continental breakfast and requires advance registration. Also on April 2 at 10:30 a.m., a postdoctoral seminar and luncheon, "The Postdoc Compact and You," will be hosted by the Office of Graduate Studies. This session and luncheon are open to everyone who registers in advance. Other activities for students April 2 include the annual graduate student poster session and a workshop for undergraduates on preparing for graduate school, which requires registration. The 2008 Undergraduate Research Conference, sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Studies, wraps up the fair activities April 3. | |
