- UNL history professor William Thomas has been named the Eccles Center Visiting Professor in North American Studies at the British Library. The British Association for American Studies awards this prestigious fellowship to one North American scholar a year. It supports 10 weeks of study in residence at the British Library in the Eccles Center for American Studies in London. Thomas holds the John and Catherine Angle Chair in the Humanities.
- The 2007 Nobel Peace Prize has a UNL connection. Terry Mader, professor of animal science, was among the contributors to the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that shared the prize with Al Gore. The Nobel Committee cited IPCC and Gore "for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change." Mader was among the authors from more than 130 countries who contributed to the IPCC's climate change assessment report. He worked with the team concentrating on climate change impacts, adaptation and vulnerability.
- An article by Kenneth Cassman, professor of agronomy and horticulture and director of the Nebraska Center for Energy Sciences Research, was named to the "Best of 2007" collection from the Environmental Research Letters. The journal's editorial board and guest editors selected the top articles published in the journal. Cassman’s article, "Climate change, biofuels and global fuel security," was featured in the Perspectives section of the January-March 2007 issue.
- Giacomo (Jack) Oliva, dean of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts, has been selected to receive the 2008 Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award of New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development. This is the highest honor given to Steinhardt alumni.
- Sheila Scheideler, professor of animal science, recently received the 2008 Nebraska Poultry Industries Hall of Fame Award. This is the prestigious group's highest honor and recognizes an individual for outstanding lifelong contributions to the poultry industry.
- Diane Barger, professor of clarinet, was selected to join the artist/clinician roster of Buffet Crampon, a leading manufacturer and distributor of wind instruments.
- Two books published by the University of Nebraska Press have been selected for the Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Program this summer. They are The Enders Hotel: A Memoir by Brandon R. Schrand and Beyond the Divide: Two Journeys into the West by Daryl Farmer.
- Robert Wilson, professor of agronomy and horticulture, was named a fellow in the Weed Science Society of America. Wilson was recognized for developing integrated weed control systems in irrigated crops and rangelands in western Nebraska and for his award-winning publications on sugar beet and dry bean production.
- Allan McCutcheon, professor of statistics and survey research and methodology, was named a fellow of the Midwest Association for Public Opinion Research.
- Physics professor Peter Dowben became a fellow of the American Vacuum Society in October 2007.
- The Office of Graduate Studies recently honored 10 faculty and graduate students for contributions to outstanding graduate education. Awards, recipients and faculty advisers were:
- Lowe R. and Mavis M. Folsom Distinguished Doctoral Dissertation Award: Thomas Miller (Svata Louda, professor of biological sciences); Christine Stewart-Nunez (Hilda Raz and Barbara DiBernard, professors of English).
- Lowe R. and Mavis M. Folsom Distinguished Masters Thesis Award: Jennifer Huebner (Robert Hutkins, professor of food science and technology).
- Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award: Neal Bryan (Walter Schacht, professor of agronomy and horticulture; Tala Awada, associate professor in the School of Natural Resources); Martha Gregg (David Pitts, professor of mathematics), Ezra Zeitler (David Wishart, professor of anthropology and geography).
- Outstanding Graduate Research Assistant Award: Tina Koeppe (Barbara Trout, professor of textiles, clothing and design).
- Excellence in Graduate Education Award: Azzeddine Azzam, professor of agricultural economics; Jordin Soliz, assistant professor of communication studies; and Mark Wilson, assistant professor of biochemistry.
