New procedure for some IACUC protocols

New UNL Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) review procedures have been implemented for some projects involving animals in research and teaching.

Under the new review procedure, proposed project protocols that include USDA Category E or certain endpoints will automatically receive full committee review. The IACUC adopted this change recently to ensure adequate protocol discussion among committee members.

The Institutional Animal Care Program will notify the principal investigator if his/her submitted protocol will be reviewed in this manner. The IACUC will review the project at its next meeting. The principal investigator is encouraged to attend and answer questions from committee members. During the meeting, the IACUC will discuss and vote to approve, disapprove or table the project pending further review.

This new procedure will likely increase the time from submission to approval by as much as four weeks, depending on when the proposal is received relative to the next IACUC meeting.
