ADVANCE events slated

The ADVANCE-Nebraska program is sponsoring several speakers and workshops this semester.

The goal of ADVANCE-Nebraska, funded by a National Science Foundation grant, is to create an environment at UNL where all science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) faculty thrive. The grant supports best practices to recruit, retain and promote women STEM faculty and efforts to study what practices best support their academic success.

Events are at the Nebraska Union unless noted. To RSVP or register for these events, e-mail advance2@unl.edu. More information is available at the ADVANCE-Nebraska Web site.

  • Feb. 11: ADVANCE-Nebraska Paths to Success Luncheon, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Judy Walker, professor of mathematics, will speak on “The Importance of Determining What’s Important.”  RSVP by Feb. 9 for lunch reservations. The talk begins at noon.  "This is an opportunity to meet other science, engineering and mathematics faculty over a free lunch," said Mary Anne Holmes, ADVANCE-Nebraska program director.

  • Feb. 22: Perceptions of Climate and Connectivity among UNL STEM Faculty, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Christina Falci, assistant professor of sociology, and Julia McQuillan, associate professor of sociology, will present and discuss results of two surveys testing the hypothesis that women in STEM are less integrated into research and social networks than their male colleagues. Lunch provided for those who register in advance.

  • March 29: COACh Workshop: Powerful Presentations, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. This interactive workshop will help women hone their speaking skills. There will be plenty of practice and individual coaching on how to improve performance. Please register in advance.
