Several new research and education partnerships forged during a UNL delegation's trip to India are expected to broaden international opportunities for faculty and students.

Chancellor Harvey Perlman led the UNL team that signed academic and research agreements with several Indian universities and research organizations, built relationships for broader future partnerships, met with government, business and university officials, and toured research parks.

Perlman, along with Prem Paul, vice chancellor for research and economic development; David Allen, dean of the College of Engineering; and Namas Chandra, associate dean of engineering, made the entire two-and-half-week trip. UNL faculty participating in parts of the visit were Larry Rilett, professor of civil engineering and Nebraska Transportation Center director; Ken Cassman, professor of agronomy and horticulture and Nebraska Center for Energy Sciences Research director; Rolando Flores, professor and head of the Food Science and Technology Department and Food Processing Center director; Jeyamkondan Subbiah, assistant professor of biological systems engineering and food science and technology; and Harshavardhan Thippareddi, associate professor of food science and technology.

UNL signed agreements with:

  • International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics, known as ICRISAT, for collaborative research, including the opportunity for UNL plant science graduate students to conduct research in India;
  • Anna University in Chennai, one of India's top engineering schools, for a joint doctoral program and collaborative research in engineering; and
  • India's Ministry of Food Processing Industries for a partnership that will bring Indian government researchers to UNL to learn about food processing practices.

In late March, officials from several Indian engineering colleges visited UNL's College of Engineering. The visit helped solidify UNL's ties with Anna University. More faculty and student visits are planned this summer.
