Stimulus funding offers a rare opportunity

Stimulus funding offers a rare opportunity
Prem Paul
Spring is always a busy and energizing time on campus. This year is especially exciting and promising because we have a rare opportunity to attract additional resources to support our important research.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, commonly known as the stimulus package, significantly increases funding to most federal agencies that support our research, including NSF, NIH and others. This is a golden but time-sensitive opportunity to bring in additional funding for research while creating jobs and economic activity in Nebraska. To take advantage, we must think creatively, act decisively and respond quickly to stimulus opportunities as they arise.

Much of the stimulus funding will go to meritorious proposals already in the pipeline, but there are new opportunities as well. Funding agencies already have contacted some of our faculty about new or supplemental stimulus funding for their research. Should you hear from a funding agency, please let us know. If you have pending or recently awarded proposals, consider contacting your program officer about possible stimulus funding opportunities or supplements.

The Office of Research is ready to help. We are tracking stimulus opportunities and preparing to address reporting and accountability requirements. We launched the UNL ARRA Web page where we post the latest stimulus funding announcements, information and links. Please check this site often. We also recently hosted an open forum to brief faculty on the ARRA and to answer questions. My sincere thanks to all faculty who attended. The forum PowerPoint slides and Webcast video are on the Web.

I also want to thank all of my faculty colleagues for your hard work and dedication. This has led to tremendous research growth at UNL in recent years. Thanks to you, research has grown despite tight federal research funding. However, our federal funding has not met goals set for us by the Board of Regents so we have more work to do. We encourage inquiries and discussions about potential research projects you are pursuing, stimulus related or not. We would welcome the chance to help you brainstorm, network and refine your plans.

I couldn't end my spring column without urging you to participate in our 2009 Research Fair next week. We have a great lineup of speakers on timely research topics including the stimulus, international opportunities, and industry and foundation relations. It will be well worth your time to interact with these speakers. I look forward to seeing you there.
