Symposia/Distinguished Lecturers

The Research Council has following two deadlines each year for the Distinguished Lecturer and Symposia applications: March – the 2nd Friday of the month (Applications accepted for visits/lectures/symposia that will be held in July – December of the same year) AND October – the 2nd Friday of the month  (Applications accepted for visits/lectures/symposia that will be held in January – June of the following year). Preference will be given to proposals contributing most directly to research being done at UNL and to those which benefit the most people. Under these programs the Research Council will support no more than four visitors per department during a six-month period.

Distinguished Lecturer applications

The Research Council supports distinguished invited scholars who appeal to and interact with a large interdisciplinary segment of the university community. The speaker must be distinguished in his or her field. The stature of the speaker will be judged by his/her academic rank and institution, the number and significance of the speakers scholarly publications (books, journal articles and abstracts of meeting presentations) or, artistic works/productions, honors or honorary degrees, volumes, books or journals edited, research grants and contracts secured. The program must include at least one lecture that is open, free-of-charge and advertised to the entire University community. Funds may be used for travel and local expenses for featured speakers and/or honorarium.
Applicants are encouraged to use good judgment in requests for honorarium funds. Any exceptional expenses or honoraria must be strongly justified. Funding requests may not exceed $3,000.

Symposia applications

The Research Council supports outstanding invited scholars who will give symposia or colloquia that should be of interest to a large interdisciplinary segment of the university community. The program must include at least one lecture that is open, free-of-charge and advertised to the entire University community. Funds may be used to pay for, but is not limited to these expenses for the scholar/symposia: travel and/or local expenses, an honorarium.  Applicants are encouraged to use good judgment in requests for honorarium funds. Any exceptional expenses or honoraria must be strongly justified. Applicants must be able to secure other funds to cover a portion of the budgeted expenses. Total requested funds from the Research Council may not exceed $3,000.

 

The new application form, which features electronic approval and routing, is accessible through NUgrant under the Apply heading on the Research Council home page. Applications must be submitted through NUgrant; paper applications will no longer be accepted.
