About Research Compliance Services

 
Objectives:
  • Increase knowledge of, and sensitivity to, issues in responsible conduct of research, including promoting continuous learning and quality enhancement.
    Foster the ability of human participants to make ethical and informed choices regarding their role in scientific research.
  • Develop appreciation for the range of accepted scientific practices for conducting research.
  • Provide information about the regulations, policies, statutes, and guidelines that govern the conduct of federally funded research.
  • Serve as an educational resources for faculty, staff, and students in their research and scholarship.


Some roles and responsibilities of RCS include:

  • Coordinate policies, procedures, communication, and training activities across campuses to meet University benchmarks for compliance programs and to enhance the sharing of best practices across the University.
  • Ensure primarily through education and training that faculty, staff, and students responsibly conduct research at the University, in compliance with federal, state, and university regulations and guidelines.
  • Assist in the coordination of the translation of new legislation and regulatory requirements into compliant University practices - acting as a principal source of guidance for researchers and administrators on all campuses on the implementation and interpretation of external research compliance and integrity requirements. In addition, serve as a resource for forecasting where policy may go in the future.
  • Understand and manage the connections between research compliance and non-research compliance issues that are the responsibility of other areas of the University, such as food production.
  • Set baseline standards for record keeping and documentation of research activities, procedures, and expenditures that are compliant with government regulations and internal policy, and are consistent throughout the University.
  • Ensure that training programs and materials for the human research protections responsible conduct of research are updated and incorporated in a timely manner to reflect regulatory changes and new requirements; ensure that training materials are accurate and comprehensive.
  • Play a leadership role and maintain an active network with colleagues at peer institutions in responsible research activities, keep abreast of the peer efforts, and incorporate best practices into UNL's research compliance program.
